So this morning I used vanilla bariatric advantage meal replacement shake. Im not really sure I like it, It needs a little something so I added a half cup of decaf coffee and 2 tbls os SF vanilla syrup and it was better but Im wondering if there are better meal replacement shake powders that anyone has had that is really good alone or suped up? This one tastes kind of bland and pastee, and if this is what my main meals are Id like it to be a little something to look forward to. any help with suggestions would be great :).

Thanks Melissa

There is one called real meals. It is a liquid meal replacement, and is supposed to be good for bariatric patients. I hear they are pretty good. They will also send you a free sample if you request it. Might give it a try?
Google it, to find the website. I'd get it for you, but I am on my way out the door to head up to Denver. Blahhhh.
Good Luck melissa!
As a side note, when you need protein, Unjury Brand is my favorite, and it is bioavailable (meaning easily absorbed, and of medical quality. You can find them at unjury.com It comes in 5 flavors. The ship fast. I love the vanilla, mixed with orange crystal light...tastes like an orange creamsicle! Also like the chicken flavor, to sip in the evenings.

Hello!
I am new to WLS actually, I have not had surgery yet.  I have my initial consultation in August.

However, I am trying to learn a lot before I go in.  Can please tell me about these protein "shakes".  Are these a way of life after WLS?

Are they expensive?

Hello ledaizey

yes protein shakes are a part of your post-op life. The farther out post op you get the less protein shakes are needed because you can get protein from food sources. So yes they will be a regular part of your post-op life. I am not yet post-op so I cant tell you from experience but I have my surgery on the 11th of august and in all my research and all the help Ive gotten on here I feel I can answer this for you. Yes they can be expensive around $20-$50 for a big tub. Hope this helps!

Melissa :)

Welcome to OH Melissa,

I am still pre-op myself.  Found many good sounding recipes on another members site.  Check out "the world according to eggface. "  Recipes for shakes and post surgery meals and snacks.  Keep reading others postings, ideas appear in many places.

Hey all you newbies! I finally had a chance to get to the computer. So.. Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. Before you have your surgery, the surgeon or nutritionist should go over all of the requirements as far as protein and nutritional supplements they want you to have, and in what amounts.
The sad thing about wls, is there doesn't seem to be a set standard on post op supplementation and procedure. Some doc's require more protein than others, some have you on liquids longer than others, etc. So it is important to discuss this with your doc and know exactly what their procedure is for you to follow.
Again, I like the unjury protein, and find it is very reasonably priced compared to some. But to me the important part is it is of extremely high quality. Very bioavailable and medical grade. You can supplement all you want with protein, but if it doesn't have a good bioavailability, you will not get much out of it, so whatever brand you go with MAKE sure it has good bioavailability. (It should be stated on the package). Whey proteins are usually decent in bioavailability. A super cheap protein does no good if it is not high in bioavailability, and also if it is packed with carbs. Many of the cheaper ones have a high carb count. Make sure to watch this when selecting your protein. Also watch the calories. Some are much higher than others in calorie content.
Hope this helps!

Well thank you!  I have just been in a stubborn plateau, so I am hopeful this is the beginning of more loss. At a year out, the loss is definatly much slower! But I am soooo happy with my progress!
