Topic: Losing hope, 85 pound regain

Hi. My name is Kimberly. I am a single 35 year old mom to one fur kid, my Shar Pei Champion. I am an RN by profession. I am 5'10" tall. I had my Gastric Bypass in Jan of 2011. I started at 341. Currently am 270. I was down to 185 for a day about 20 months post-op. Have been regaining ever since. The more I try to do better, the worse I seem to do. Last year I gained a whooping 45 pounds, it was awful. While I have only lost 7 pounds from my highest weight this year, I am thankful that overall my weight is only up 3 pounds from January 1 of this year. So even though, it isn't much I am not gaining hardly anything which is progress over last year.

My struggle is crappy carbs. If I eat them I crave them like crazy and gain a ton of weight. If I don't eat them my blood sugar goes to 30. This has happened several times at work and it is not safe as I need to be on top of my game taking care of my patients.

I joined weigh****chers 4 weeks ago, thinking maybe being with others that struggle would help. Knowing I have to weigh in every week is helping some. I am only down 3 pounds in 4 weeks though. So frustrated.

Did anyone else suffer this much regain and lose it for good? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Snowbaby,

You got some great advice already.

I would make sure you keep up on your labs and get back to basics. If things get worse and don't improve, I think you need to see another doctor to check what is causing the symptoms you are having. Could you have pinched nerves? or I dont know if you can get restless leg syndrome in one leg, but maybe a neurologist could shed some light.

Good luck! Hope you will be feeling better soon!

Welcome Crystaldawn307!

Congrats on being a mama! Awesome, my boys were 1995 and 1997. Makes me a little nostalgic.

You are not a failure, this is a journey, and dang! Maintenance is no joke! Learning process, ongoing for me.

I regained 32 pounds all on my own, but I have lost 14 so far. Slow going, but moving forward.

Support really does make a difference. I definitely feel less alone know others can understand and relate to what I am going through.

I'm glad that you're a BOTTer so we can support you.

First, you are NOT a failure.  Unfortunately, regain is a common issue.  I've regained twice!  The good news is that you can lose regain.  Check out the article on 16 Ways To Get Back On Track.

You can do this!

I had my RNY April 2009. My highest  weight was 287.  My lowest weight was 155, almost reached goal weight of 140.  My current weight is 178lbs.  I'm glad I found this group for support.  I'm needing to get back on track so I don't continue to gain weight.  I want to lose and finally reach my goal weight of 140.  I've had 2 baby boys which have made my weight gain and weight loss struggles.  First son was born in 2012 and my second was May 2014.  I've also just quit breastfeeding, of course I instantly gained 10 lbs :(    I know what I have been doing wrong for me to not lose but gain as of now.  I felt like a failure but overall in actuality I'm only up 23 lbs total but I never did reach goal weight.  I know if I get back on track with everything I learned from the start I can lose and finally reach goal weight.

You are NOT a failure!!

How long ago was your blood work done?  I would talk with your nutritionist about your blood work and the vitamins and minerals you should or shouldn't take.

Getting back on track can be hard.  Cutting back on carbs is difficult and also difficult for our bodies.  Depending on how long I've been off track, eating carbs of the sugary kinds, I will be in a bad mood, irritable and very fatigued.  For me, I have to ride it out, and then I feel better.  It has taken as little as three days and up to a week.  While I feel miserable during this time, I know that I'm getting rid of the carb junk.

As long as your doctor didn't find any issues and that you're fine, get back on track.  I know it sucks but try to outlast the side effects of changing what you're eating to get back on track.  It is worth it.

how were your other mineral/ vitamin levels?

i.e. low B1  can cause nerve damage, while high B6 can cause same symptoms like low B12.

not enough salt in your diet- can cause issue.

too much carbs -  may cause issue. and so on..

BTW: if  I eat too many carbs for a while -= then try to go on a low calorie - low carb diet - I feel like being sick - flu like symptoms, including muscle pains, headaches, etc.  Increasing water, teas, chicken stock, adding extra magnesium, etc.. usually helps and eventually things level out.

a few days of "carb detox " can be brutal .. but once I tough this out - I normally get much better and the hunger gets under control..

I had surgery almost 5 years ago. I got down to 198 (for ONE day!) from 275. I stopped losing and am now up 35 lbs. I want to get back on track but having issues. I have tried figuring out how I ended up where I am now and several factors come to mind. The biggest one for me is that for some reason I got SO angry, tired and my left leg developed a tremor and sometimes cramps. My Dr. did blood work and found nothing wrong. My B12 and D were actually too high so I stopped supplementing. My potassium was just barely on the low side - just like one point below range but my Dr didn't think it was enough to be causing a problem. Every time I try to get back on track the rage and fatigue returns. I am eating lots of high potassium foods but not seeing a big change. I'm just wondering if anyone else has run into this sort of thing or if anyone has any thoughts on what could be causing all this? I'd really like to get back to the basics but with these issues I don't last very long.

I can sympathize. I learn to buy computers directly from manufacturer or ...Costco or Sam's... I seldom have problem with that. Used product - people are getting rid of them because they are either not good = or too old so new programs will not run on them...

and have a BF who works for ITr is a huge bonus..

Good luck...
