13 yrs Post....help?

I meant to post this messege here but I messed up and posted it on the main discussion forum  anyway, I am not posting it here too.

Hello, I was having problems posting here but finally have it figured out. Anyhow, I am 13 yrs post from gastric bypass.I have much pain today in my neck and shoulders (nothing uncommon these days) so I do not want to go into my whole story. The bottom line is I oringally went from 261 to 120 within the first year. By year 3 I was putting on the weight again. Currently I am back up to 202 and having major health issues. A few months ago, I came back to OH to see if others were having the same issues.  In the past few yrs as my health started deteriating, I mentioned to different doctors if maybe some of the issues could be from WLS. Usually alls I heard was "maybe" yet nothing was done to look into it and I would walk away with meds. After coming back to OH, I was excited yet sad that so many of us this far out have had the same problems. I learned from some knowledgable people on OH that I was probably suffering from vit. defieceny. I found a dr who listened and seemed eager to learn from ME about my WLS. She ran numerious blood work where we did discover major difiencies.  Again, spoke of my results on OH and got advice on what vits I should be taking and anyother questions I had.  I started on vits and even though I have days like this where I hurt overall I feel a lot better. I have been watching what I eat and keeping track for the past 2 weeks. I want to lose this weight again! I want to be healthy again! Unfortunely, the DR. I found is not longer practining in my area so I am not able to see her.  I know I said I wasn't going to go into the whole history and I havnt, well, the history that got me back to this point because I get angery with myself and with my surgeron way back when. So after all this rambling, I have a question.....how much cal, protein, fat, carbs, and all that nutricial info should I be having this far out in order to get back on track. According to my fitness buddy on line, I am still over eating, eating better but still over doing it. BTW, I take many meds for depression, anxity, ptsd, fibromy.  Can anyone help me figure ot what I need and how much??? I looked at going back to the very beginning but I really don't know what that was suppose to have been.  so, there is my "condensed" version. Anyone that has some info or if anyone else has had similar experience, I woul dlove to hear about it.  Thank you all and its great to finally be able to post here.

Hello, I don't have much time today, but I just wanted to say hi!

Everyone is different. You would need to figure out what works for you and your activity levels.  I can tell you what works for me to lose and to maintain.

I can't exercise much -  and I deal with severe RH, so my diet is rather limited. But it works for me.

I typically set a goal for me at 1200 calories per day.  That is to maintain and to lose if I exercise some...(mostly walking, or yoga)

My foods are proteins, (including protein shakes) , meat, fish, eggs, veggies, and nuts.  I do follow gluten free - grain free diet. That works best for me.  Grains almost any grains and starches (potatoes, beans, rice, etc) may cause a severe RH (low Blood sugar) even if I eat that with protein and fat. So I gave that up.

But I love nuts, natural nut butters, non starchy veggies, pickles, and so on.   Cheese in one of my staple foods.

I don't eat a lot at any meal - snack - but I eat often - 5-7 times a day. I bake my own NSA goods, and make "fake" pancakes... and muffins..

(goggle eggface blog) . I eat butter and coconut.

Not enough food - may make you hungry and miserable.  Read  earlier posts and see what people do and eat...  that may be the best way to find out what everyone is doing...

Good luck...

thank you. I deal with fibromy. so I know what it feels like with mini exercise. I too have been doing 1200 cal  but I am not sure how to figure sugar and carbs, how much I need or should be having. thanks again!

This what I do for carbs protein and fats:
Carbs= 4 cal
Proteins = 4 calories
Fats = 9 calories.

Based on my lab work and my low carb diet (due to RH) I need 100-150 gr of proteins a day to maintain good blood levels.
I star there: average 120 gr proteins = 480 calories. I do best with no more than 60 carbs a day (no more than 20-25 from natural sugar) , 60 carbs = 240 calories.
Proteins + carbs = 480+240=720 calories. That leaves 480 calories for fat = app 55 gr of fat.
Most my meals I try to make sure that they have proteins : 20 gr, plus fat 9-10 grams, plus 10 gr of carbs - and then I make sure some of the carbs is fiber.

The basic ration for me is 20-10-10 proteins:fat:carbs (in grams)
My body handles fat better than it deals with carbs.

Hi Critter_Angel;

I am so glad to hear from someone out as far as you.  It is easy to get compliance and let our vitamins get deficient.  You probably had a doctor like mine that said that Flintstone chewables were fine.  In the beginning I did not know about vit D, B, iron, good Multi's or cali****upplements.  I make this discovery about 4 years out of surgery when I started not feeling my best.  Now I am a cheerleader for good supplements.  I had a set back during my fourth year out and gain 70 lbs back.  I started at 306 and my lowest was 151.  It took me 8 months to getting back on track and dropping those 70 lbs.  I am now between 155 and 163 on any given day due to lots of swelling issues that I am having now.  I have had two surgeries in the past 13 months for plastics and hernias.  For me to lose those 70 lbs., I cut my calories back to 800 a day.  I had 100 grams of protein, 50 net carbs or less and the rest in fats.  I started walking 30 minutes a day and was up to 1 hour a day a month later.  After about 2 months, I increased my calories up to 900.  It seem that every two months I would add about 100 calories to my day.  I am on 1200 a day now and maintain quite well.  When I was losing weight, I only weigh one a week.  If I weighed daily, I could show a gain on any given day so I did not need that to bring me down.  You can get back where you were at but it is not as easy as before.  The pouch is still there, you just have to work it a little harder.  As for depression, I am on lexapro more so for anxiety than depression but it has been a life saver for me.  If I can help you in anyway I will.  I am on the board here daily journaling my food.  This is also something that you need to do for yourself so that you know what you are consuming.  Every calorie does count.  Good luck to you.  You have made the first step to recovering what you lost.

Wow, i am so glad you posted. It helps to know there is someone who has gone thru what i am AND has had success losing again@!.

YES, my dr was a flintstone vit guy but didn't even seem to stress that point. The only thing I do remember him pointing out is not to eat bread unless it was toasted and to cut meat up into teeny tiny pieces.

I started noticing a gain about 4 yrs out also about the ttime i didn't feel so hot. By 2006 i was unable to work. I feel under the no insurance, no money for medical attention. Things just got worse and worse. I ended up on disability in 2012. Since then I have been more proactive in my health.  I cam back to OH and was shocked to see so mnay others dealing with the same issues! I started to think maybe i wasn't just a screw-up. After many many blood tests and heart tests, i realized most of my problem was from lack of vits. AND the lack of knowledge about the surgery in the first place.   My pre weight was 262, my lowest was 115 but i felt terrible and was always sick with something.  I gained to 130 and felt much better about me but still was so weak.

Then life trouble kicked in adding a lot of stress; finances, unhealthy relsationship, 3 teens and a younger child. Before i knew it, i was again, stress eating. It may sound strange to some but my oldest started gaining weight and I felt guilty and stopped eating what i should. So today i am at 202. I am angery at me for getting back to this.

Anyway, i decided to start the vits and with the help of somont on OH i got advice on what i should be doing in that dept. If you don't mind I would love to send my vit regiment to you and see what you think.  The past two weeks, motivated my my youngst, (will be 18 in a month) has started gaining weight and it is affecting her self esteem which has led to other issues.  I am not able to get much activity in but do plan on walking.  I would like to start at 15 min which isn't much but a start. I am going to join the Y today!  I am having a hard time figuring ot what my nutriciant numbers are and what is good carb, bad sugar and all that stuff. lol

I again, thank you for your post!! I need all the support and info I can get. My kids are grown with families now and i just left a relastionship so i am pretty much alone. look forward to chatting with you!

Looks like you are running short on a good multi vitamin and calcium citrate.  Most RNYers need 2 to 3 multi's a day and 3 calcium citrate's a day to get the amount normal people get without the malabsorption (sp),  I would get some centrum multi's from walmart and increase my calcium citrate's from 1 to 3.  I would up my B12 to 500 mg and if your Vit D3 is extremely low then you would probably need a 50,000 mg dry Vit D to get it back in the normal ranges.  I order those from vitalady.com and they really did the trick for getting my Vit D back on track.  I see you are on a lot of iron so I am assuming that you were getting really anemic.  You may want to look at getting some magnesium oxide and miralax if you are having any issues with the bathroom.  The iron really did a number on my system.  I promise you that you want OD on the vitamins but we do have to have a lot of them to function like "normal" folks.  I got me a weekly pill box set and put my vitamins in it on the weekend and I am set for the week.  I just grab a day and go.  I got my box at Walmart.  Hope this helps you.

sounds good. I will take your advice and modify my vits.  Yes i was very very low iron.  Enough so, that we spoke about a transfusion.  i think that is what it was called.  I do have a pill box and do what you do but i think i might need another! lol.

I am going to post my nutricianal intake i gt from my fitness buddy. it is so confusing.  I have some errands to run but i will post them later or tomorrow.   thanks again!
