After RNY, have you noticed becoming allergic to more things?

Before RNY, I never had any allergies.  Today, 8.5 years later, practically every new med out there I'm allergic to.  I'm just being reminded of this now because my doctor put me on Levofloxain for an ear infection on Thursday and the symptoms were building until last night it was overwhelming.  Being that I'm on a liquid diet and have fibromyalgia, it took a little longer to recognize it was an allergic reaction.  I'm just wondering if the part of my intestine that was bypassed might have something to do with this?

I get a pins and *****ly feeling all over.  Then my face breaks out under my chin with sores.  Then the pains in my stomach feel like horrible bloating and this deep cutting pain into my ribs.  As this progresses, I notice I'm extremely agitated, my depression builds again, my ears start burning, and I just have this anxiety that builds more and more every day I'm on the medication.  My muscle pain gets to the point my muscle relaxers for the fibromyalgia don't help at all.

I have gotten this reaction to almost every medication (prescribed) for at least the last 5 years.  Have any of you noticed this?  Granted, I've been on a lot of meds since surgery, I was always able to take amoxicillian without a reaction prior to surgery but no longer can without the above reactions.

I assumed it was the fibromyalgia that caused these reactions, but the bypass of my intestines makes a much more explainable answer.  Sorry for rambling.  This current reaction has me hoping I can figure out what might be causing it so I don't have to experience the pain again and intense agitation.  I've had this same reaction to about 30 meds now.  Something has to be the cause.

I am so sorry for all your issues that you are having.  I am 7 years out of open RNY and so far, knock on wood, I have not had any allergic reactions to any medications that I have taken over the years.  The bypass only causes us to not absorb as much of the medication as a normal person would but I don't think it would cause us to have reactions to different medicines.  Maybe some one else will chime in on this question, I am only one that has not experienced this, others may have.  I hope you find out soon what the cause is for you and you can find a solution for it.  Take care.

Yes yes and yes...

I am 5 years out and my allergies are just getting worse.

But -  that is most likely due to Adrenal deficiencies that I was just diagnosed with.   With low cortisone level - the body may become allergic to many things.  (and adrenal deficiencies may cause RH, allergies, muscle and joins pain, stomach pains, nausea, gluten intolerance or sensitivity, lactose intolerance, and so many other things... etc, etc, etc.) I am not suggesting that you have that - but maybe you can see a endocrinologist and have the hormones tested.)

BTW: a few months ago I decide to eat gluten free and since that time I am able to tolerate more foods and my RH is finally more or less under control.  Some people suggest that gluten sensitivity (not real intolerance like in celiac disease) may cause leaky gut syndrome and that may cause more food - chemical sensitivity -  allergies.

Well, I know the acid in the stomach has an effect on the breakdown of medications and if not properly broken down, perhaps it hits the intestines as a chemical allergy?

For me, the reaction is always the same and they aren't the obvious kind of allergic reaction.

I get pins and needle feeling all over, brain fog and difficulty making decisions.  I have a burning pain on my skin and burning and pounding in my ears. I feel like my blood is shaking inside my skin.  I start to get a icky feeling under my skin and my face, under my chin, will start breaking out in little sores.  The sores are NOT acne and the only thing that stops the burning pain is benadryl.  I get agitated, frustrated, anxious and feel like I'm losing my mind.  The inside of my mouth will break out in canker sores.  Sometimes, I start getting where it's difficult to breathe.  This reaction always starts about 2-3 days after starting the med, so it's a delayed reaction that has to build up in my system.  This same reaction occurs regardless of the medication family.

I know it's an allergic reaction because taking benadryl reduces or relieves the symptoms and they come back when the benadryl wears off.

I have been tested for adrenal issues because that's what I thought was the problem.  I thought it was because of my deficiencies and saw an allergist.  The thing is, it happens regardless of the medication for the most part.  I'm so blessed my fibro med and muscle relaxer don't produce these sensations and symptoms, but it took a LONG time to get on something that didn't cause this reaction.

It doesn't happen on over the counter meds or with my supplements.  It's just strange.  And I have looked to see if it's a particular class, like Sulfa, but it's all across the board.  I don't know.  I went to so many specialists and they couldn't figure out why.

so sorry to hear that... it may be the acid or the gut - the reroute and how meds gets absorbed.  I take Benadryl every night and then another allergy pill (generic Allegra or other like that meds) in the morning. I still start losing my voice every evening..

if you get reaction to any antibiotics - maybe you get worsening of yeast infection - Candida infection? that may cause a lot of what you describe...

I know that any antibiotics I am prone to allergies - almost to anything unless at the same time I take stuff to control yeast - Candida.  (I take diflucan orally - but that also may cause problems in some people )

I was diagnosed with Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency (AI) , and while I was looking for answers I found a support group for AI.

One woman is posting about allergy to any meds ( including antibiots) and her search to find out what is going on. who knows - maybe she can help you?
