I am having a family member ( my lil brother) go through this I think...anyway I went through a period where i CRAVED cough drops...even the sent of some cleaners can trigger me wanting to eat not just a couple but like half a bag.,..not good for me but I am very concerned for my brother he craves BEER and dark chocolate...the taste of them. It is almost uncontrollable and I swear I totally understand the craving...not to the same things but what can I do to help him...this past weekend he got a DUI and will not be able to drive for 2 yrs. Our family is extremely close so he has a great support system. I have one other brother who went through a WLS and he battled with alcohol too...Could a vitamin deficiency be the cause of the cravings?  help if you know anything i can do for him I would appreciate the information ...
thanks

I know for me after i would eat carbs my blood sugar level would drop and I would crave sweets or just more carbs.  I cut out the white carbs and just get most from veges, my cravings are almost non existent.  It was hard to cut out the carbs, but I just went back to the basics and within a week the cravings were gone, and an added bonus I lost 17 pounds in 2 months (I'll be 5 years out next month).

I do believe that vitamins - minerals deficiencies may contribute to addiction. RH - reactive hypoglycemia - I know that ma trigger the drinking. Low iron, B12, B1 - D, proteins - may cause depression and that in itself may make drinking and getting addicted more easily.

He had the sleeve ...being he does not have absorption problems  is this possible just from the weight loss ?  OR can those who have the sleeve have  absorption problems

all of the above.
Many "normal" people - non WLS have minerals - vitamins deficiencies.  Just because they don't eat the right stuff, or enough of the right stuff or can't digest - absorb.
i.e. normal people have vit D deficiencies. Majority of them. pre-RNY I was anemic and had vit B12 deficiencies. Most likely D - but was never tested.

VSG= smaller stomach - less stomach acid - so unless he is supplementing with vitamins - minerals - his numbers may be low.

People of antacid - for life - may have issue with calcium and other vitamins.

That - and also real "transfer addiction".  If food - qty of food - was his coping mechanism before WLS - alcohol or drugs may be the coping mechanism post op.

I have 2 books about addictions - both mentioned the person underlying issues - correcting the mineral -vitamin deficiencies and the person can get and stay sober.

BTW: I crave alcohol - wine when my RH is not under control - and when I get tired - depressed due to low iron. This year I started to drink more wine - and realized that my depression and being tired had to do with low iron - ferritin. I got iron infusions, and not only I have more energy - but I also don't care for too much wine. I may have 1-2 glasses on a weekend - but I don't really want any during the week.

My worst "alcohol" cravings and worst drinking months was when my iron was really low, I had anemia and was trying the iron pills for a year to bring it back up. My drinking was almost out of control. But after I got infusion and my anemia went away - I was able to give up the alcohol for over 6 months. Now I have if I want to - but don't really crave it. For me - my vitamin - mineral deficiencies lead me to drink more - alcohol made me feel better. Now - I feel better when I don't drink. And feel worse if I do - so why bother?
