Question about fruits and vegs!
Hi Kriste,
I eat veggies every day, usually with lunch & dinner, but limit myself to a serving size (1/2cup on reg veggies & a cup + for salad)...Fruit I limit as a treat, really like fruit but usually shy away for the amount of carbs & sugar that is found in most fruits...

Anyway, I am taking advantage of the free fruits and veggies, but Im trying to make sure I get a variety. This week, I bought strawberries, apples and bananas. Im finding bananas very filling, but since I know they are so high on the GI scale, I limit to one a day. Ive been having a garden salad daily and we usually always have had veggies at dinner anyway. I made sure that I stocked up on protein shakes and some bars to ensure I get my protein as well as having a protein and veggie based dinner. I know last time I did WW, pre op...I was wasting my points on more carby foods.
This week is my first full hard core WW and workout week, so hopefully I'll see some results on Friday.
Fruits have too many sugars. Some of us, especially for people with RH, starting day with sugars (even natural) may start a cycle of high and low blood sugars. And hunger.
If I eat fruits – I only try to eat them in the afternoon, when my sugar is getting low, and always pair them with proteins and fat. And only eat fruits that I tested on my body that it will not produce really bad RH , even if eaten alone. (i.e berries, some apples). I tested that: eat serving of fruits at least 2 hrs after last light meal (high protein, low sugar carbs). Wait 1 hr. Test the BS 15 min after eating the fruit, and then every 15 min starting with 1 hr after fruit, until app 2 hr after the fruit (or other food you test).
Now - out body is funny (at least mine is) that one day something may be fine... and another day .. I may crush.
Some people are OK with carbs - some get RH - even small drop (from normal) may casue more hunger, cravings and weight gain.
Post op RNY – some of us make too much insulin for the amount of sugar-carbs that our body is getting due to rerouted small intestines. Too much insulin in the body promotes weight gain and stops fat burning.

it is the body reaction to sugar - or even carbs. Even small amount of eaten sugar or carbs may stimulate the pancreas to send too much insulin. The insulin may cause a significant drop in blood sugar 30 min to 2 hrs after a meal. Low blood sugar - below 70 to as low as in low 30 or even 20.... are known in 1-2 year post op RNY people. Even for those who did not have any sugar issues before RNY. (I did not) .
Currently (last 2 years) all my fasting blood sugar is too low.. that indicate that my body may be in "storing mode". The problem is that most likely I do not have a lot of glycogen (the body reserved sugar - in liver and muscles) in my body, because I eat low carb - high protein diet. But if I do try to get more carbs - my body crashes... and I gain weight,,, (insulin forces sugar into the fat cells). Darn you do - darn you do not...
