How do you handle temptations?
UGH!
I have been doing pretty well this week. My husband had a stroke and feels so worthless so I don't say no to him when he gets interested in doing something. He decided to make an apple pie. I suggested he search google for a Sugar Free recipe.
He made one but it was NOT sugar free LOL It looked so awesome and I walked by it while it was cooling and didn't eat it. I said be sure and put it in a plastic bin so it will stay fresh. Translated get it out of my site LOL He didn't and I ended up putting it away after I took a couple of tastes. ARG...
What are some great tips you can share to resist temptation? I will make notes of all the suggestions and put it in a doc for us.
Thanks,
Kathy

Temptations are always around so dealing with them is important.
I try to keep other choices on hand so I can have a bite or two and then have a piece of fruit.
I don't think avoiding things we enjoy is always the best choice. If it can not be done in moderation then skip it. If you can have just a sample once in a while it is ok.
I like the way you asked for what you needed. Too bad he was unwilling to do it.
The problem I run into is then getting upset with the person for not caring enough to help me do what is best for my health. I let my emotion get in the way and don't always just put it away myself like you did.

I was once told by a doc that you have to live also, you just can't give up everything, just have it in moderation. Warm homemade apple pie?
Thats a real treat and how often do you get it?
So go ahead and enjoy it, just don't eat the entire pie in one sitting.
Something that is common and routine, like in my case - potato chips which are my weakness, I just REFUSE to have them in the house.
Another trick is if you feel you are about to give in to temptation is to stuff yourself with protein. A couple of rolled up slices of turkey breast does the trick for me.

Depends on the temptation, lol. So as a recently quit cigarette smoker, some of the techniques I am using work with food also & are some things my surgeon originally recommended also. I have heard that a craving will normally pass in 15 minutes.
Get a fresh serving of healthy fluids (bottle water, decaf beverage, etc) I love to grab a decaf cup of coffee in the evenings when my cigarette/snack cravings are kicking in, flavored creamers make it a treat in itself
Start an activity (take a walk, go clean something, pick up a book, etc)

I agree with richbehr: life is too short to not have warm apple pie.
So you had a taste. Not bad, I'd say. Putting it away was a great idea for your own sake.
In future, plan for the taste. Sit down with a cup of coffee and a VERY small piece of pie (or
share your DH's slice) for a treat. Mindful eating is the key. Putting your brain on "Pause" and
gorging isn't an option. I know this for a fact!
Best wishes,

Best wishes,
I'm an amateur astronomer. (I have telescopes and know how to use 'em! ) Right now I am saving up for a rather pricey piece of equipment for my hobby, so EVERY dollar I spend only gets spent only after I ask myself if the whatever I'm buying is worth more to me than that equipment. This includes FOOD.
I printed a small picture of the item out and carry it with me - I'm a visual person and taking a look at my objective gives me reinforcement on the spot. I have several really hideous pictures of me prior to my surgery that I've posted in the kitchen to provide negative reinforcement every time I open the cabinet or fridge doors.

I had to think long and hard on this question. How do I handle temptation. Obviously, not well in the past. Currently, I have one direction going and that is losing my excess weight. I plan my sweets on a daily basis and I plan my dinners out. If an unplanned temptation is presented to me, I take myself out of the equation. I literally walk away from it. If it is brought into my home by my loving sister, I calculation the calories, figure how much extra I half to walk to burn those calories and it that does not change my mind, I go weigh myself. If I splurge, I got to know what it will cost me. Am I perfect, no way. Do I take extra walks? Sometimes. It's not always easy turning a blind eye to a hot, chunky, chocolate chip cookie.
