Which way is CORRECT?!
So, do we eat only when hungry? Do we eat every 3-4 hours if we're NOT hungry?? Either way, I'm ALWAYS thinking of food!!!! I read the book "EAT WHAT YOU LOVE, LOVE WHAT YOU EAT". The author is a doctor. She says that the "eating every few hours" thing is basically a myth. We should ONLY eat when hungry. What if it's a day, not that I have many anymore, that I have no appetite?? Do I NOT eat all day and get sick with low blood sugar??
Hi Melissa
I would never eat when I am not hungry and I always eat when I am hungry. If I get too hungry I am a mess. A lot of people lose their appetite after WLS especially if they have a really good functioning surgery (appropriate pouch, stoma and bypass). I also have to watch my blood sugars because they are both high and low. I eat every 2 to 3 hours...almost always to keep my blood sugar stable. I also eat no sugar, no white flour or pasta or rice. The only carbs I eat are veggies, fruit, whole grain starch, milk etc. However because of the amount of food I eat I put away 2000 calories easily without junk. If I string together months of 1600 cal. days and good workouts I can get down into the 160s or 170s which is still overweight because I am only 5 3 1/2 inches tall. When I exercise my blood sugar drops so I have to eat right before and after exercising too. I find a lot of us still struggle to lose weight after surgery. Count your blessings that you have a limited appetite but be careful for low blood sugars, By the way my endocrinologist doesn't believe in "starvation mode" either. I personally don't agree with him but he is the expert. I sort of agree with your author. Life would be simpler if I could eat less often.

Interesting spin. I say this is not what the author meant. Everyone has to find what works for them. Both systems work if done properly and moderation is used. The director of my WLS program told me to eat when I am hungry. If 4 hours has passed and I am not hungry, he recommended I eat a reasonable 200 to 300 calorie meal. He advised never to go more than 4 to 5 hours without eating something.
