Gained 15 pounds since sleeve - SCARED TOO DEATH

I am so glad to find this section on OH.  I need HELP.  I have been eating & drinking everything and anything that I wanted too for a long time now...and finally got on the scale last night to discover that I had gained 15 pounds since my lowest point after surgery (March 2007).  HELP ME!  I am so scared that I am gonna gain everything back again and I don't want to go there again.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I went and purchased lean turkey, provolone cheese, light fruit cups, EAS protein shakes, bottled waters (grab and go), string cheese and green apples today.  I am gonna concentrate on water (lots of it) and NO CARBS as best I can.

Confession time - for some reason I feel like I need to confess what I have been doing wrong to you folks (good for the soul, I guess).  Some days - I would eat nothing but cookies.   I bought ice cream sandwhiches and ate 4 or 5 a day.  I started making homemade bread from a 25 year old sourdough starter.  I would eat the warm bread with butter OFTEN straight out of the oven.  THEN, I'd make homemade cinamon rolls from the dough with lots of great icing.  WHAT was I thinking???  I'd keep chocolate candy bars in the freezer and pop several at one sitting.  I maintained around 155 for over 2 years so I thought that I couldn't gain anything, I guess.

I am now hearing about a 2 year honeymoon period - could someone tell me about that?  Why can't we drop the weight like we did right after surgery - i loved that "8 pounds in a week" loss, why can't we do that again?

I really need help from y'all.  After my surgery - thsi site was a GODSEND to me and I feel like now will be no different.  Please ... any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yall have a great week.

Chris

Chris,

First....take a deep breath and calm down. Regain after WLS is the NORM, so you are not alone.

But just because it is the NORM does not mean you have to endure it. You can and will get back on track by concentrating on a few things.

When we first have WLS we are aided by two things: a GREATLY decreased capacity to eat, and a GREATLY decreased absorption of calories.....oh, and often an INABILITY to feel hunger. At two years out, most if not all of these things have changed. While many still have some degree of limited capacity, most will agree that it HAS increased. We can now eat close to what a "normal person" eats, meaning one serving or almost one serving. Our intestines are able to reclaim some of their calorie absorbing capability, probably thru the body growing more absorbing villi in the portion of the intestine that we are still using. And of course, often appetite comes back once all the nerves have regenerated to our surgically altered stomach.

Add these things to the tendency to become complacent with our food choices, exercise habits, etc. and you have the recipe for regain. We begin to believe we are normal; we begin to believe we have "cured" ourselves of fatness. WE HAVEN'T.

Now....how to get back on track? By going back to basics. You have allowed the "carb monster" to come out of hiding by eating so many simple carbs. So for the time being, cut them out!! Focus first on protein; next, on complex carbs which means carbs that are STILL ATTACHED TO THEIR FIBER. Fruits/veggies/whole grains/beans are beneficial carbs; anything that is WHITE  probably isn't. Be sure you get some healthy fat in the form of EVOO, avocado, and nuts in as well; these add significantly to our satisfaction with food. Drink tons of water and exercise....

Do these things, and come to OH for support, and you WILL drop the weight again. I myself have had two episodes of regain, both 25-30 pounds; both surrounding stressful events in my life. I was able to get the weight off by following those simple steps. They are SIMPLE....they are not EASY, especially at first, while you are retraining your body and your mind. That is why support is so critical.

Don't forget to take your vitamin and mineral supplements as well. For a reminder of what you should be taking, check out the American Society of Bariatric Surgeon's website here: http://www.asbs.org/Newsite07/resources/bgs_final.pdf. It may not cover the sleeve on this PDF; but if you go to the site, maybe you can find something more in tune with your particular surgery.

Don't throw in the towel....we want to support you, so COME TO OH OFTEN!!

Chris,

Thank you so much for sharing!!  Your confession sounds exactly like what I am going through.  I'm sick of my crappy eating habits and eating those horrid sweets, carbs and junk foods.  And I'm tired of "starting over", but you know, that's the nature of the beast when I have this food addiction I seem to have.  I keep reminding myself of the fact that WLS was just another tool I am using to lose the excess weight.

I haven't been on this site very long but it sure has been helpful for the time I've been here.  I love this place!!

Take care and keep doing what you're doing.  You (and I) will thrive and make it through this bump in the road we're experiencing.

I am so happy that you figured this out at 15 pounds.
It took me EIGHTY pounds of regained weight to finally get mad and take control.

It sounds like you are on the right track.

I started writing down EVERY bite I eat. I used to do this in the past and "cheat", but I really write everything down now. It really does help.

I am pulling for you. I know you can do it!!

Hi I'm in the boat too, I have gainecd 25lbs. Highest weight 334, Lowest 168 now hanging out around 190. I hope to get inspiration and guidance from all of you. I never made it to my personal goal of 155. I do not think that is posible. But I am going to try. I do not do refined sugar or carbonated drinks, but I do eat fried foods. My pouch is still small and I do not overload it. (still can't thank heavens) So I just need a kick in the pants. I am 56 and really need to do this.
All suggestions are welcome.
