New from Iowa

Hi,

I'm from Iowa and I'm new to this group.  I was looking for some support and help getting back where I was.  I had WLS on 2-11-09, lost a total of 80 pounds as of 8-10-09.  I discovered I could eat sugars without dumping and kept eating them more and more often.  I eat according to the post surgery diet pretty closely, but eat way too many sweets.  Does this happen to others like it has happened to me??

Right now I feel like I've failed once again because I am up 20 pounds and can't seem to get on track.  It frustrates me that I spent all the money I did on the WLS and I'm not keeping the weight off.  It's just deja vu for me due to all the attempts to lose weight over the years.  The same old, same old story for me..........lose and gain, lose and gain.  Grr!

I am grateful to Cathy W, group leader, for allowing me to join the group, and hope the support I anticipate getting here is my ticket to get back on track and stay there.

Thanks for listening and being here.

Welcome to Bott Carolia !

I am 7 years out and still can't do sweets, I am lucky ! ! !  I had regained around 25 pounds over the last 4 years and last fall decided to get rid of it.  This site was a wonderful place for me!  I wish you much success, I know it is hard to get back on track.

For me it was carbs so I cleaned them out of my body for a few days and then followed the proper eating program for me and was able to lose all of the extra weight.  I was so glad to get back into my smaller clothes, then I also went and had reconstructive surgery this past February and I am back to being thrilled with myself.  I am back to weighing myself weekly (hadn't done that in a few years).  I am now wanting to lose 5 more pounds but haven't done a good job with that but am not beating myself up over it, it will happen, I just have to up my excercise and keep my carbs at the proper level.

Good luck and again, Welcome!

Thank you for your response.  I NEEDED to hear from someone.  I was on a different forum at OH and it sort of fizzled.  I was getting lots of support and input on that forum every day, multiple times a day and it was very helpful.  Many of us who used to post on there noticed it kind of fizzled and think that's why some of us have gone to other groups looking for posts and lots and lots of input/support.  There's also a person posting very inappropriate (in my opinion) comments about her experience with physicians and it's sickening that nothing is being done to stop her/him from posting.  It's not a very positive or helpful place at that other forum so I decided to move on.

I read something recently that said essentially, "get back to the basics" so that's where I'm going to start.  It worked before and it will work again but I know I have to do my part.  You mentioned exercise and I know tha'ts a HUGE piece that I am not faithful about lately so need to get moving!

Thanks again for your response.  It is appreciated more than you probably realize.

Hello Carol,

Welcome and you have made a good choice in joining BOTT.  You also may want to join some more groups.  I enjoy several groups on OH.com.  They are all useful.  One board that is good for the mind set is "All in the Mind" group.  There is not a lot of interactions there but the posts are great and helpful for our brains.

The WLS fixed our pouch but not our brains!!  We are the only ones who can work on our brain.  No surgery for that one yet.  We all were told WLS is just a TOOL but we did not really figure that out until weight loss stopped or gain started.  Be thankful you only gained 20 and I know you can get it off.

I like you have never experienced dumping.  I never reached my goal weight and I gained 80 pounds in over 3 years time gradually.  Finally I said no more in March of this year and I am down 20 pounds.  So it can be done!!  Keep lurking on the MANY groups and forums on OH.com and you will stay focused and mindful of your goals.  There is so much Free help out here, you just have to use it and be determined not to fall into vicious cycle of regain.  Hang in there and believe in yourself.  Normal people fluctuate in their weight.  So stop thinking you failed yet again.  You have still maintained 60 pounds so that is awesome!!   Negativity will get you now where.  My personal 3 P's are Perseverance, Patience and Positive.  Read my blogs since March when you have time.

It is not easy but it can be done.  I think you must have thought like all of us that WLS was the easy way out.  Now you know that is not true.  The fact that you posted today tells me you will be a success and you will get 20 pounds off.  Yes you can!! Believe it and do what it takes.  Kathy and Cathy have some powerful pages to use for getting back on track.  Print them off and this will help you to get back on the stick!  KIT and I wish you the best in your efforts.  We are here for you!

Thanks, Molly for all of your suggestions.  I tend to "beat my self up" when I slip so don't mind me.  I know I am doing great things but it's just frustrating that I think I'm going to lose by not doing my part.  I'm not doing all I can do to make the weight loss happen, but I am willing to and that's a huge step in the right direction.

Again, thanks to all for your support!
Carol
