Oh, I'm not happy...

Good morning Botters,
Well, it's official...Debbie is down, Literally.  Ever since I was a young girl, I've had lower back problems.  They always said that it was because I was on my feet for such long periods of time(my family owned a restaurant, I won't even go into that part of my life, it's too long).  Over the past few months, I've noticed that my right foot burns and hurts when I'm exercising.  Then last week I started getting a really bad pain in my butt cheek and down my leg.  I kept plugging along with my exercising and outdoor activities.  Well, yesterday when I was driving, the pain in my back got so bad that I had to pull off the expressway.  I was able to get in to see my doctor.  The diagnosis is back spasms and
sciatica(I didn't think I was that old enough for this!).  I'm off my feet with muscle relaxers and steroids.  I'm sooo not happy with this current event!!!  I feel like I've really hit a good point with my exercising and have really felt so good!  On a good note, the doc said that I might be able to get back to the health club some time next week.

Hi Deb. I am so sorry for you. Pain is the worst thing in the world. Take it easy now and then when it is possible, start slowly with your workouts.

Big hug coming your way!

I know what you mean. I am going strong but now my right knee is acting up with pain. I got a shot of Orthovisc from my ortho doc. I have to go two weeks in a row for more shots. If this doesn't let up, I'm looking at a total knee replacement. I am not ready for that.

Take care!
Lucy

Hi Deb,

Oh that's rotten, and I'm sorry to hear about it. Did the Doc say anything about stretching on the arms and legs? Even though you can't get to the health club and do some cardio, some things like Yoga or pilates are very low impact on the back. Not all of them, but some exercises in them. It might be a good motivator to not let you feel like a bump on a log while you're waiting to feel better. That seems to be your biggest fear, and I don't blame you. It always seem to go that when I start making progess, I feel good then decide to have a break (of course this is not your decision) and find it really hard to start back up.

I wish you luck and get well soon!

Hey Debbie,
I'm sorry to hear that.  I had sciatica a few years back and a chiropractor helped me more than the meds.  I hope the steroids take the inflammation out and don't set off cravings.  They drive me nuts when I take them.  Hope it's better soon.  (((Hugs)))

I got that a few years back.  Was on steroids, etc.  Due to that I put on 80 lbs... that is why I had to have the RNY.  But with me - the MRI - showed 2 herniated disks.  I could not walk and I lost some feelings (for a while) in my left leg.  That's when i was put on steroids, antyinflammatory stuff, etc, etc.
Now - I get spasms on and off all the time on the left side.  I used chiropractor, acupuncture, herbs, and everything else.  It took me 2 years before i was more or less - able to function.
But - when i started yoga - that helped me a lot.  Now i am back to yoga.  You may want to look into that.

Hi Deb, I lurk a lot on this board, but just had to reply to your post and let you know you are NOT alone in this struggle at all and I truly understand what you are going through.

I was a few years into my WLS journey, loving my new body and was soooo into exercising and loved it.  Never did I think that I would sustain a back problem (cause is truly unknown by doctors) and it would halt my journey.  I just turned 29 and within the past two years been diagnosed with two partially herniated discs, arthritis in my back, narrowing of the spinal column, numbness in leg/foot, etc.  Sidelined from all exercise per order of my spine doctor, I do feel like I might in fact be losing my mind.  I was told I have the back of a 60 year old... and can only speculate that it has been due to me carrying around all those extra pounds all my years, that's what the docs seem to think too.  I think I've been cursed!

I completely sympathize and truly hope you are back up and running again very very soon!!!!

Deb,

So sorry to hear you are down.  Hope you are back to your usually perky self soon.

Sciatica is not just for the older set.  I found relief from a fantastic chiropractor when I experienced sciatica and other back problems (arthritis in the lower back, degenerative disk disease, etc.).

Take care of yourself my friend.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts!
It's just so frustrating.  My biggest fear was the steroids.  I've heard so many bad things about them.  I made it through yesterday just fine, no cravings, other than the regulars ;) .  I will be researching yoga classes and get to a chiropractor within the next few days.  I wasn't sure if they would be able to help me.  I'll try anything at this point.
I hope that everyone has a great day!
Deb
