Mom's Day Tradition

Hi BOTTers,

I'm looking forward to this weekend because of Mom's Day.  It will be a day for my hubby and sons to be together - just us.  I love and treasure our family time.  Honestly, just being together doing whatever is the best gift of all.

We used to celebrate Mom's Day by going out to a nice restaurant that had a buffet.  I'd leave feeling physically miserable and not terribly happy.  Sure, the food tasted great but the after-effects, the lingering regret of my choices weren't the best set up for a special Mom's Day.

After I had my surgery, for the first Mom's Day I wanted to start a new tradition.  Instead of going to the feast fest, we went for a hike.  I had a blast.  All of us did.  We were together, talking, laughing and hanging out instead of feeding our faces.....feeling fuller than full and going home laying around.  Since then, we've always done something non-food centered.  The best gift of all is being with those you love and being together.  All of the buffets we went to are unmemorable, yet the ones we've spent together doing things besides eating are treasured memories.

Mom's Day:  Family first - not food!!

You're so right - LOVE ISN'T SERVED ON A PLATE.  That's something all (or at least most) of us has had to learn as, like me, we were raised by a "food-pusher"  In fact, years ago when I was in Weigh****chers my husband, children, and I went to my folks house and I was working very hard to follow the Weigh****chers plan at that time and my mother actually said to me, "How will you know I love you if I can't feed you?"  Now that's a pretty strong message that food is love. - you know what?  Love and food is a lot like salt and pepper - you often find them together but the sure aren't interchangable.

Happy Mothers' Day to one and all

This is wonderful advice. I´ve actually implemented this for my birthday which always used to be about indulging in everything I knew I shouldn´t. Now it´s not about the cake and chocolates that I consumed all day, it´s about going to the salon and having my nails and hair done and getting into that small little dress that didn´t fit the year before!

cheers,
Marisa
