Hypoglycemia

OK...here's the thing. I started my new plan today and already I've hit an obstacle. Less than 3 hours after my breakfast I am crashing. My blood sugars fell to 59. I got shaky, irratible, couldn't think straight and felt starved to the point that I might pass out. I went ahead and had my snack and already my sugars have jumped to 100. Now I'm feeling better. My question....does this mean I should eat every 3 hours? Or should I change something? I will consider all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

hi nixie,
i don't know if this a problem for you but it is for me. i have hypoglycemia since weight loss surgery. if i eat anything with white flour in it, a couple of hours later my blood sugar starts to cra**** has gotten as low as 32. i don't even get shakey but have a strange feeling that comes over me and i cannot focus my attention. the only thing that brings it up within 15 minutes is a protein drink. it is really scarey. check what you are eating and if you are eating enough. eat your protein and have good carbs, like a fruit. i know that the white flour and sugars spike our blood sugar to rise quickly and the it starts to drop very quickly causing us to actually feel starving and wanting to eat more. that's where i'm at right now, trying to get off the white stuff.  good luck and feel good that you started your new plan.

I get reactive hypoglycemia also, especially if I go too long without eating.  What did you eat for breakfast?  Was it mainly protein, or was it a cereal w/milk, or something like that?  I find that the more I stay away from refined white flour and sugar, the better I do.  And yes, I make it a point to eat at least every 4 hours, because "the jitters" are the first sign to me that I need to raise my blood glucose.  I was waiting for a friend at an airport today and tested my blood with my monitor and found that about 6 hours after breakfast, I was at 91.  I had to wait for about an hour more, but I could feel the tension in my system.

Try to eat "Protein" first, then add a complex carb or fruit into your meal.  I do eat salads or steamed veggies (Trader Joes has a wonderful frozen green bean concoction with garlic! Yum!) although I can only fit in about 2 tablespoons of them after I eat my main intake.

You need to eat--food is fuel.  Don't make the old mistake of depriving your system of the nutrients you need.

Good luck!

I had an egg, a piece of sausage and a slice of wheat bread. I'm wondering if maybe I should have added a piece of fruit. I'm going to switch things up today and see how it works. I'm having dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner.

Well, that's pretty good protein, but not knowing how it was fixed, I can't comment.  I'm surprised that you did get the reactive response.

I've had a n/f milk shake with Isopure Low-Carb Dutch Chocolate protein powder and a medium banana for the past 5 years, and don't have a problem with RH in the mornings, although it may be happening if I don't have a good enough lunch,.

You just have to keep trying--and why not have dinner for breakfast??!

Good luck.

The exact same thing happens to me. I get reactive hypoglicemia as well. The only way that I´ve been able to control it is to cut out a lot of carbs.

Check out the glycemic index for fruits and maybe try to stick with the ones in the lower range. I can handle cantaloupe and strawberries fine, but a banana or grapes will give me the jitters and/or hunger pangs a while after I eat them. Sugars are the source of my downfalls everytime, so I try to stay away from them as much as I can. Also, I´ve found that adding some fat (a little cream cheese or peanut butter) to a fruity snack, helps me keep my sugar levels more even.

And don´t look at this as an obstacle. It´s only your body communicating with you

Best of luck,

Marisa

p.s. also, I try never to go more than 3 hours withoout eating. A fist full of peanuts can do the trick...
