Hi everyone,
I had the sclerotherapy yesterday (endo procedure to repair my enlarged stoma).  I managed to get about 24 oz of clear liquid into myself today. The goal is 28-32 0z. .  It was a struggle.  Tonight I try my first protein drink .  Should be interesting since I feel like there is a huge boulder sitting in the middle of my belly.

Hi Ginny,
Can you explain in simple terms what it was that you had done please?

Hi Peg,

Basically what Dr Thompson did was through endoscopy inject a solution made from cod liver oil (I know...weird huh?) into the stoma area.  this creates scar tissue which will make my stoma smaller.  He did explain that this sometimes has to be done more than once to get it to the right size.

I am now on a liquid diet for 14 days and then will progress to puree..then soft protein....just like right after my gastric bypass way back in 2002.

I am blogging because I really want to be able to let others know how it goes.  Lots of people are curious.   this doctor at Brigham & Womens seems to be the only one in the area who does it.

I am hoping to drop about 40 pounds.     ginny

Hi, Ginny:

I had not heard of this...interesting!  Please keep us posted on how you are doing and how well you think it works.  It is amazing the things they are doing in bariatric medicine, isn't it?

Keep up the great work!  :)

Ginny, I curious to know did you request this procedure or did the doctor recommend it?  Does insirance pay for the procedure?

My bariatric surgeon referred me to Dr Thompson, suspecting that I had an enlarged stoma.  From what I see on these boards, it is quite common.  I had my gastric bypass in Feb 2002 .   Dr. Thompson did an endoscopy to see what was going on in there.  Once he saw the stoma issue He recommended sclerotherapy.  I don't think there are many doctors doing it yet.  I do know that it may take more than one time with this to get the most benefit from it.  I will see Dr Thompson again in October to assess whether or not I need another one.
My insurance did cover it.  I just had to get a referral to Dr Robinson (at Brigham & Womens...my original surgeon) anything after that was covered by that referral.   Believe me, I checked with the insurance company first!  Ginny

I just realized we were neighbors!  Small world.  Where did you have your original surgery?  Did someone refer you to Dr. Thompson, and how long did you have to wait for an appointment?  I think he is also the Dr. that does the Endo procedure to suture up staple line fistulas.
Best of luck!

Hi Peg,
I think Dr Thompson is the go to guy for all these problems after gastric bypass.  He is a very busy guy.   My original endoscopy with him was in April.....I couldn't get another appt until July 6th for the procedure.....and my followup is in October.

It did take awhile but I am glad I couldn't have it until after the school year was over...I must say that I am a bit uncomfortable.  I can't imagine having to teach like this.   It feels like there is a big ball of air in my stomach.  If that's gas...look out neighbor!   ginny
