Not just "ok" ...very much welcome at least by me. I plan to have my surgery at St. David's downtown after the first of the year and knowing there is a support group on the North side since I work downtown but live out near Lakeway! Appreciate it.

There's a monthly support group that meets at St David's North Austin Medical Center each month. It's a pretty big group and has been a great support for me (Classroom 2A). Doors open at 6 and it starts at 6:30. It's totally free and is led by the bariatric coordinator for the hospital.

It's not only for VSG patients, but obviously there's a lot there, usually about 30 people attend. It's well worth the time to come!

Here's the lowdown for the rest of the year - you don't have to have surgery there or anything, all are welcome, those looking into surgery, had surgery and those who are there for support.

There's always a speaker and an activity:

11/14/12
Topic: Exercise, Fitness and You
Activity: Come meet with several local fitness experts

12/12/12
Topic: How to Celebrate a Healthy Holiday
Heather Mackie, MS, RD, LD, Celebrate Vitamins Dietitian
Activity: Celebrate with our Holiday Eggnog and treats from Celebrate Vitamins

They also have a monthly clothing exchange, so bring your "Undergrown" stuff and see what's available. Remaining items are donated to charity after the event.

Feel free to send me a direct message if you have questions about it! :) Or if you see this after the dates I posted. I noticed this group was pretty dead, but I wanted to at least give some info for those looking for a support group. I hope that was okay!

Sorry Heather - I didn't get a notification about this post.  I am finally "back" after all my family/life stuff.

I was actually going to see if someone else may be interested in leading this group.  At each meeting, we've only had 1-2 people attend.  Not sure if there is enough interest to continue the group or if we need a new leader.

Hmm somehow I missed this post before now... anyway...

I'm Heather... I live in South Austin. I had surgery on Oct. 29, 2009 in Mexico. I am hoping the surgery will allow me to be more active. I've lost 86ish lbs so far (~100 to go! OMG) and I can definitely tell I'm able to more more and I have more stamina as far as walking and stairs and such than I did before surgery. Good stuff! I'm also kind of like Brenda and hoping that after I reach goal the weight loss helps with fertility so my husband and I can start a family. As far as hobbies... I'm a big nerd. I love science fiction/fantasy books and movies. I like to write and I'd love to actually finish a novel some day. My husband and I do a lot of online gaming (EverQuest II). I love Roller Derby! My husband and I have season passes and we go every month to watch it. Good times!

Looking forward to the next meeting!

Hi, I'm having VSG on April 27th in Austin.

My goals are to (obviously) lose all my excess weight with WLS and finally keep it off.  I'm also trying to stave off diabetes and get rid of my sleep apnia.  I'd also like to start exercising regularly.

I will be having surgery on April 1, 2010.  I'm very excited and VERY nervous.  i can't wait to shop in the "normal" section of stores... or enjoy shopping.

Does this group have meetings?  I am looking for a support group in the area.

Thanks!
