How Come No Diet Soda?
March 12, 2010 10:40 pm
My surgeon's advice has been no carbonated bevs because the carbonation creates gas which can potentially stretch the pouch (above the band for lap-banders). This, even gentle stretching, requires more food to feel satisfied and defeats the purpose of creating a smaller pouch in the first place.

It's sort of the idea of "eating to feel full" instead of measuring portions and "eating to feel satisfied". Some WLS'ers want to feel full (lap-banders call this concept chasing restriction so the band makes them stop overeating) where others are happy to eat a measured portion and feel satiated until their next meal. Long term, if you eat to feel full, by the time that signal reaches your brain, there is still food in your esophogus that has not reached your pouch. That food, however small it is, has to squeeze in there too. We never quite know when to stop because there is a time lag between when we swallow and when food actually reaches our stomach/pouch. It's always best to measure portions.

The other issue with diet sodas, even flat, is that they contain artificial sweeteners. These sweeteners are many times sweeter than sugar or corn syrup. There's a study that was done at Purdue that suggests artificial sweeteners are actually counter-productive to weight loss. If you think about the diet food industry, Americans seem to keep getting more obese even though we keep eating more of that "diet", "low fat", "sugar free" food.

There's a great book out called "Food Rules" that talks about eliminatng chemicals from your diet and getting back to eating real food. I think it's a great read. The author really encourages people to eliminate processed foods from their diets, shop mainly on the outer edges of the grocery store: produce, meats & dairy and to buy organic fruits/vegetables and free range/grass fed meats when you can. That's the simple summary.

It has been almost 3 years since I've had a soda and, honestly, I don't miss it. If you look on the back of a can, they are almost pure chemicals. It makes me feel good to know that these small changes lead to big ones. Think about a ship leaving Spain heading for America. One tiny change to its course and it will end up in a completely different place because it has to travel across the entire ocean. The same is true with our WLS journeys. The changes we make to our old lifestyles from sedentary to active, from eating high-fat/high-calorie foods to lower-fat and healthier balanced meals take our lives in a completely new direction. We are the captains of our lives. We can steer them in any direction we want and there is no timetable that says we have to get to goal by next week or next month. What is important is that we make the lifestyle changes necessary to reach our destination!

Good luck on your journey!

Almost a year and I'm still here!
February 23, 2010 4:51 am

No it's not my bandiversary! I was banded 6-18-07. I was referring to my motorcycle accident on March 8, 2009. I can't believe it is almost 2 weeks until March 8th. My life really was put on hold during my recovery from the accident. I couldn't exercise and I was very depressed. I ended up gaining weight, 32 lbs, during that time. So, it's nice to feel like I am getting back into my daily exercise routine and making heatlhy eating choices.

What's great about WLS is that it doesn't let us stray too far off course. Yes, I gained some weight during my difficult time of recovery and being sedentary. But, once I kicked back into gear, the weight has started coming back off.

Today, I am 4 lbs from being the weight I was on March 7th, the day before my accident. Could I reach that weight by March 8th? Maybe but it's not as important as continuing to make healthy lifestyle choices everyday. I'm also putting an emphasis on weight lifting to try and develop a physique. I want to look and feel good more than just focus on what the scale says.

The group is growing!
July 9, 2009 5:21 am

Yesterday was 4 months since my motorcycle accident and I noticed that AtlantaWLSsupport is now 88 members strong. That is fantastic! I don't see much posting on the group but I will begin to work on that. I have had my arm in a cast and my leg was broken also.

Now I can type again!

Being a resource can be rewarding
February 11, 2009 3:20 pm
A WLS friend of mine called tonight to tell me she has a bug of some kind and is throwing up.  She was concerned because she has a lap-band and was worried that this was a sign of something bad.

I told her that she should focus on fluids first... water, clear liquids and trying to get them through her band and to stay down. If that works, then she should then try to progress to full liquids like skim milk or SF pudding or meal replacement drinks like Atkins or Carnation Instant Breakfast with skim milk (my personal favorite).

We talked for a little bit but I could tell she was really under the weather.  It's been a while since I've chatted with her and it was nice to catch up.  It made me realize that we all need resources to call upon when we're worried or when our surgeon's office is closed.  She has my cell phone number and I have her's.

I like knowing that there are some people who find some of the information I've posted on my blog helpful. Others will take what I write with a grain of salt and some will use some and throw the rest away.  That's fine with me!  The idea is to keep my thoughts and experiences documented for future reference and for those who come along after me so they don't have to make the same mistakes I have.  Some will, of course.  That's just human nature.

There are those who just have to fail and realize that what other's say is actually true.  They say, a smart man learns from his own mistakes.  A wise man learns from other people's.  I really want to be a wise man. Somehow, it doesn't work out that way!  They also say, some people are auditory learners (they learn by hearing), others are visual learners (they learn by reading or seeing) and others are tactile learners (they learn by doing and experiencing).  I think I am in the latter group!  I need to do.  I read about things but when I actually experience what I read, I get it.  Until then, it just doesn't click with me. Other people read it once and they are set.  Maybe they're the lucky ones!

Being an OH group leader allows me the opportunity to be a resource to others but it also allows me to be exposed to a variety of other people in many phases of this journey from exploration to many years post-op and the vast stages in between.  I take from each of them something.  A little tid-bit of knowledge when they share their experiences with me or the group.  Hopefully, this helps each of us become a wiser person in the long run and not just smarter!

Potential Meeting Location
December 30, 2008 3:05 am
Today I went to Whole Foods on Briarcliff and to the one on Ponce in Midtown.  I met with the Community Relations Manager at the Midtown store and discussed having a monthly meeting at their location.  She gave me her card and asked me to send her a mailnote outlining what I'd like to do.  So, I am making some headway!

Hopefully, we can setup a location for this group to meet monthly.

Is there a preference for meeting location between:

Midtown

Briarcliff

Let me know.
