MSW,

Thank for your response!  I've read both sides of the story as well.

I had stopped eating sugar-free chocolate and in the past few days started eating one or two pieces a day (1) to get my sweet fix and (2) in the hopes of getting my sluggish intestines moving again as I've been a bit constipated.

BTW, you look great!   :D

Topic: Digusted with weight gain on Atkins
I lost 150 lbs with RNY gastric bypass and decided to do Atkins for maintenance.  I am a carb addict so it seemed like the right thing for me.  I love this way of eating.  So much better than low fat!   In the past six months since starting maintenance and Atkins, I've gained 10 lbs.  The first 5 lbs were a good gain.  I looked and felt better.  But these last 5 lbs are not good.  I don't know what to do.  I'm not eating a tremendous amount of food - I can't with the pouch restriction.  Maybe I'm eating TOO MUCH fat, even though I thought, if I keep the carbs low (I usually eat only 25 net carbs a day) that I didn't have to worry about fat grams.  This is an average day for me:

(about 23 net carbs)

protein shake (3 nc)
Crystal Light (1 nc)
cup of tea w/ Splenda, S&L and 1heavy cream (3 nc)
cup of Sanka w Splenda, S&L and heavy cream (5 nc)
1 bottle of Diet Snapple Ice Tea (0 nc)
4 16 oz bottles of water (0)

2 oz Provolone cheese + 1 oz salami (2 nc)
small scoop tuna salad, 1 hard boiled egg, 5 grape tomatoes, lettuce + 4 T dressing (6 nc)
Atkins Advantage bar (2 nc)
5 oz Brie cheese (0 nc)
2 pieces sugar-free chocolate (1 nc)
2 to 3 T butter

When I've posted my diet on the Atkins website, I got some good advice, but there is not much understanding of the gastric bypass way of eating and how many of us do not tolerate fruits and vegetables, and I was told that I MUST eat 12 to 15 net carbs of veggies a day.  My pouch will NOT tolerate that!  I'm doing my best to eat enoug protein every day.

All in all, I feel good and I'm told all the time how great I look, but I'm just frustrated about gaining a few pounds.  I'm scared to DEATH of being fat again.

Thanks for listening and reading, my fellow low-carb friends!

I drink about 2 cups with lots of half and half, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners.  If I have it around I will squirt some whipped cream on top just for fun.

I don't like fru fru coffies.

I am a coffee lover since childhood.  My habit was a pot a day but now its just a cup or two and most often decaf.  Generally black but I often make mocha with instant coffee and unsweetened cocoa powder, with or without unswetened almond milk.  Then there is my large expresso or an almond milk latte or cafe aulette.  I enjoy my coffee many differrent ways.  When I'm out its a soy latte or an americano or a double shot of espresso.  I can get it, sf chai tea soy latte with a double shot of espresso.

Some studies have shown that the body treats theses as sugar.  Therefore the impact on insulin levels is the same.  Other studies contradict this conclusion.

Your best bet in my pov is to make note of how your body reacts to them.  I do not gain weight from sugar alcohol nor do they slow my weight loss.  However, a banana will ad two pounds within a day or so.

It remains controversial.  However, the only thing that matters is how you handle sugar alcohols.  They are good for me because I get my sweet fix.  For others they are evil.

Hello,  i love my coffe.   I have at least 2 sometimes 3 cups of coffee,  however, my cup is probably 12 oz.  So technically probably 3- 4 cups (8 oz cups) I use coffee mate? might have to get some half and half,  and liquid stevia  (love it-- right now chocolate raspberry is my favorite flavor)   :o) Jeani

Hi, my name is Celeste and I am a coffee addict . . (first you have to admit the problem).

Pre-WLS, I didn't drink as much, but now, yes, same as you I probably end up having a half a pot a day.

Usually two large cups first thing in the a.m. when I get to work, with splenda or truvia (2 packs) and sugarfree hazelnut creamer, oh and sprinkle of cinammon - yummy.  If I don't have the SF hazelnut creamer (or if it wasn't on sale - I know frugal) . . . I will use the SF syrups from the 99 cent store and half and half.

Then, if there is still some left in the pot after lunch (and my half-hour post eating wait), I will make a cup of "iced" coffee with the same ingredients - YUMMY.

If there is still some left over at home when I get home, I MIGHT have another, but usually just the three large cups (which probably equates to 6 cups).

If I don't have at least 2, I end up waking up in the middle of the night with a headache, so I "HAVE TO HAVE" the coffee or I will get a headache, and we really don't want that  - ahahahah.

I usually don't go anywhere else for my coffee - the cost upsets me, but if I have received a gift card to that lovely little place, I will spend it there - frugally, iced coffee with plenty of room for cream.

MMMM M.  Well, I will now go make me an iced coffee - the power of suggestion!
