Topic: RE: Too MUCH fat on Atkins????
MSW, I thought so.  I've read all the Atkins books, from the original 1972 edition up the most recent "Atkins" book written by other doctors.  I do prefer the old books actually written by Dr. Atkins himself.  I guess I'm just searching for answers as I am so frustrated about my recent weight gain.  I can't overeat due to small pouch size.  I'm keeping carbs low.   Who knows.

Thanks for posting the info!  I appreciate your input.   :)

From the 2000 edition of the atkins new diet revolution there is the fat fast.  It is fstrictly for people who cannot get into and maintain ketosis and weight loss even on induction level carbs.  The goal is to jolt your body into ketosis by drastically increasing fat at the expense of protein.  It is 80% fat.  Therefore I don't think you can really eat too much fat on atkins as long as calories and carbs are under control.

I have included the details and a link in the intro/ getting started thread among the sticky's for this group.  Warning:  It is severe and grossly deficient in protein.  For no ops the rule is three days at the basic 1000 calories and no more than two additional days at 1250 calories.  There is no guideline for wls patients.

I tried a modified version and I did hit ketosis quickly for the first time.  My problem is I hate the taste of many fats.  For the fat fast, macadamia nuts, full fat cream cheese, and walnuts are near perfect foods with ratios of near 80% of calories from fat.

I've looked up a few other ketogenic diets over time.  Most were designed for epeleptics but have shown favorable weight loss results as well despite being very high fat.  All are low carb and calorie controlled so you retain a calorie deficit.

Your protein looks really low. Maybe add another protein shake or some more dense, heavy hitting  meats?

Just a thought,and good luck,

I asked about this on the official Atkins Forum awhile back.  The nutritionist Colette said as long as I keep my carbs very low (25 or under), I don't have to worry about my fat intake.  I guess I still can't wrap my head around this.  I'm so scared I'm eating too much fat.  I eat like 3 T of butter a day (sometimes more) and around 4 T of salad dressing a day plus whatever fat is in the food I'm eating (such as the mayo in my tuna salad).

I'm scared I'm eating too much fat.

Thanks again MSW!  I'm glad I'm not alone.  It IS frustrating to be following the Atkins "rules" and still be seeing a gain, albeit a small one.  But I know all too well that a small gain can lead to a big one.  I just don't know what to do.  Maybe what you're doing is worth a try, varying things occasionally.  I don't what to do to vary it.  Like I said, my net carb level to maintain is so low to begin with, no more than 25 nc a day, and if I go even up to 30 nc, I will gain.  So I guess I can't expect a huge loss at 20 nc (even though that is what Atkins calls Induction).

My low weight was 135.  It was fun seeing that number on the scale, but my hubby and many people said I looked too thin and gaunt and sickly at that weight, and I agree.  I looked good at 140 and  now at 145 people are still telling me how great I look, and hubby said I look much better now.  But I am frightened.  I don't want to see that scale going up, up, up!

Thanks again for the support!

Perhaps I need to just look at net carbs cause I am really into the sugar alcohol laden sweets these days.  Net carbs holding below fifty but sugar alcohols have thrown off all ratios.  I've been lazy so its all processed ready to eat stuff today.

Sunday

     Fat(g)      Carbs(g)      Net C(g)      Prot(g)      KCals
47.91 147.62 39.82 122.16 1500
  Carbohydrate (39%)/ Fat (29%)/
Protein (32%)

I've got a place holder in there for my calorie budget.  Here's my list:

sf angel food cake,chicken
mocha, sf angel food cake, chicken
chicken, sf angel food cake, diet soda
chicken, sf angelfood cake, creamsicle, popsicle, fidgecicle
diet soda, protein bar, sf angelfood cake
diet soda, protein/ fat to be determined

I wish I had an answer for you because I face a similar problem.  My post op plan is low carb.  I have remained low carb to goal and after.  I have been faithful to my plan.  However, I struggle with a 15 lb range of weight gain no matter what I do.  It began five weeks post op.

Thankfully, I have a good surgeon who understands some of us are hormonally predisposed to slow weight loss and unwarranted weight gain even after wls.  We will always have to work harder.  That is why this is no "lifestyle change" for me as others claim it is for themselves.  I am on a diet for life.

My wl surgeon, and my cardiologist separately came to the conclusion that this is how I am built.  Finally since I am no longer obese an endocrinologist is taking me seriously.  I only hope she can help.

Recently I realized that I need to vary my diet every few weeks.  It has not totally halted the weight gain but in has reduced the range from 15 lbs to 5 lbs at the moment.  I vary calories, carbs, and fat levels but always low carb.  If I go off low carb for more than a day or so my weight shoots up and my clothes don't fit.

I can only tell you you are not alone.  There are others on these boards struggleing with metabolic issues as well.  The hardest part of this is our peers assume we are unfaithful to plan just as do uninformed medical staff.  Its easier to lable us as cheating the plan than to determine why we do not respond to weight loss as expected.

Hang in there.  It took 17 months post op for me to loose just 98 lbs.  As a no op it took me 5 years to loose nearly 50 lbs.  My surgeon assured me I would make it although slowly.    He was right.  Now I will loose this extra five pound regain and drop ten for a cushion as well. Some way some how.  You will get there too.  Just stick with it.

Topic: RE: Coffee for Low-Carbers: What's the Story here?
I drink coffee all day everyday!  I will drink any way except black w/sweetner.  I start my day with a regular coffee (approximately 20 oz) w/creamer and sweetner.  There after I try to have just decaf and will drink it black or with creamer or with creamer and sweetner.  I have a keurig at home, at work and one to take if traveling.

It is a real addiction for me.  The only reason I have decaf is because caffeine really bothers by fibristic cysts and it has shown  a real difference in my mamograms.

I can drink regular coffe up to bedtime and still not disturb my sleep.

Topic: RE: 2 weeks of atkins, down 6 lbs!! stay in induction?
Wow 6 lbs in Induction is great!   Keep up the good work!  I went back on Induction after a 5-pound gain in Maintenance, and I only lost 1 lb in 3 weeks of Induction.  Now it seems I've gained it back.  It gets frustrating as my ACE is so low (25 nc) so going down to 20 nc for Induction doesn't seem to have much effect for me.
