If you are super carb sensitive like I am even fruits and good carbs are gonna mess me up. I truely have to stick with super high protein and ultra low carbs, like under 20 a day, even better under 10 grams of carbs a day. I know some people say you should have up to 100 g of carbs to keep your brain function right but I could never go that high. So you may have to try going with less fruit and more veggies and protein. Good luck to you.

That is a lot of fruit for a low carb diet.  Bananas are quite high in carbs.  Fruits are good carbs, but they tend to have more carbs than veggies.

Good luck with your PS.

Yeah, I've heard that book was a difficult read. I guess this book is basically the same info but in laymen's terms! Kind of the low-carb for dummies version! ha - just what I need!!!

From what I understand - he advocates eating protein (mostly in animal meat form) and leafy greens - all you want pretty much but trying to limit it to when you feel you need it. He does not believe in calories in, calories out. Pretty hard pill to swallow after we've been fed the notion that its gluttony and sloth that has gotten us fat. What I'm not clear about is if this is a tried and true theory or if its just his hypothesis.

I love these protein drinks & they are low carb, I add about 1/2 c. of frozen berries in them.  I also have about 1 banana, 1 apple & 2 oranges every day.  I just couldn't grasp the fact the w/1200 cal/day that fruit would be a problem.  I think I have some probiotics, I'll start using them...didn't realize they helped w/constipation.   I'm been doing the protein shakes 1 to 2/day because I'm going to have plastic surgery this summer to get rid of all this extra skin & they recommend it.

Hi Cyndi, I am new here.  I just started low carb about a week ago.  I have dropped the 3lbs of regain, and about 2 more since starting the low carb.  I am encouraged.

How much fruit are you eating and what types?  I am allowing myself one serving or one piece.  I eat apples, oranges, grapefruit, pears.  Since it's winter they are the tastiest this time of year.  Berries and melons are also pretty low carb.

Have you tried benefiber and probiotics to help keep you regular.  The constipation is one of the worst things about the low carb diet.   I really like the plain Activia yogurt which is supposed to help with constipation too.  It isn't exactly low carb, but it is full of good stuff otherwise.  I would ditch the protein shakes and add more real protein and high fiber veggies.  I hate protein drinks so I always tell everybody to ditch them!!!

No advice on the exercise front.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply MSW - I wish that were the simple answer but the truth is I don't do much of anything that would contribute to a whole lot of muscle building. I mostly just walk. Could be I need to ramp it up a little bit?! Ugh...how I HATE exercise!!! ha! But its one of those things I gotta do!

Ok, so I decided 3 weeks ago to stop eating any simple carbs.  I haven't eaten anything except for green veggies, protein shakes (2/day), grilled chicken or tilapia & lots of fruit.  Ok, YES...I admit I have been eating lots of fruit!  I thought it I ate this way I'd lose some weight.  3 weeks down the road, NO WEIGHT LOSS!  I had RNY 8 years ago & am trying to get rid of about 24 lbs I have regained!  3 weeks & no freaking weight loss?   OMG!  I am SEVERELY constipated also!  I'm doing the max dosage of milk of magnesia, stool softener & dulcolax each day & still have to use a suppository to finally go ( I know, I'm sorry...TMI).  What's wrong????  Should I totally go ahead & cut out fruit too?  Protein shakes? (they are carb free tho).  I have been monitoring my calories & have stayed around 1200/day.  You would think that irregardless of the carbs from fruit/veggies that I'd lose due to the calorie restriction.  I do admit tho, no exercise!  Oh my, maybe that would kick it off?  Please offer any advice you may have!  I'm desperate!

Hi Lee,

Thanks for your input - I think you're right that I need to take my carb intake down a notch and keep it under 20. I'm sure I'm probably metabolically challenged from years of being overweight and diabetic. For some reason its been hard to get down that low - not because of what I'm eating but how I feel. I get this really uptight feeling in my neck and shoulders when I go real low on carbs - I'm trying to find that balance where I can lose weight but also feel good. I wonder why it seemed so easy in the beginning - I felt great, was getting less than 20 grams per day and losing weight like crazy. I will definitely start logging my intake on the CAR report. I can def use a little critique on what I'm doing. Amazing how hard it is to detox after even just a little bit of carb splurging isn't it?! ha!

Gary Taubes: The key points in Good Calories, Bad Calories were buried in a 500-page tome.

Ain't that the truth!!!  I picked this book up recently since I am going back to low carb.  Boy is it ever dense.   TMI!!!  Anyway, I did get the gist of it, but really would like to understand more about how and why low carb works to lose weight.   I read something about fats and proteins are what the body burns when it is being starved.   By giving the body mostly fats and proteins, your body thinks it is starving and starts burning stored fat for fuel?  If this is so, I find that very interesting.

Anyway, thanks for posting this.  I will check out this new book.  Sounds like he may be explaining how it all works to be more readable and understandable.

Hi,

I am 61 y/o.  I had the lap band back in 2006 and revised to the sleeve in 2008

I have done Adkins off and on most of my adult life, mostly off.  It was always hard to stick to it, but since I am satisfied with way less food now, I decided to give it another try.  So far it seems to be getting the WL moving again.

My low carb theory is to try to stay around 1200 calories, give or take a few hundred.  Eat lean meats and fish in about 3-4 oz servings.  Eat as many low carb healthy veggies as my stomach will hold, prob. about 1/2 cup at a meal with protein.  Stay away from high carb foods, especially the white stuff.  I also allow for full fat yogurt and cottage cheese.  I may do one serving of fruit a day if I feel like I need it.

One thing that I am doing that I didn't do in the past is control the fats also.  I can't eat too much fat since my sleeve or I will get sick.  I regularly eat controlled portions of butter, olive oil and other healthy oils, cream, cheese, anything with the word cream in it, except for creamy things with sugar.  I don't do low fat or fat free anything unless it naturally comes that way.  I am not crazy about meat fat, don't do bacon, sausage or any other fatty meat except on rare occasions.

I am trying to get the right balance of fats, carbs and protein that will work for me.  I don't seem to be able to get the fat content below 50% which I suppose is not a big issue anyway.   I would like to stay at 40g or lower of carbs, but also try to get in as much fiber as possible.  Protein is not an issue because I always seem to get enough of that but I can't stuff myself on it.

I hope to share ideas and knowledge and to stay on track with company.  I am an excellent cook and am always willing to share recipes, although I don't have much written down because don't use recipes to cook.   I am starting to record more of the things I make so that I can share.
