Topic: RE: How Has Low-Carbing Worked for You, So Far This Year?
1.  I've mostly cleared the cabinets and refrigerator at home of carby temptations, though occasionally some slips in.  I dove into the remaining strawberry jam last week, to my surprise, though it's not usually appealing to me, so that had to be replaced with something I don't like.  I'm not perfectly low-carb, but then I'm also pretty close to goal weight, so not beatng myself up about it.  Occasionally there are treats at work (pizza, birthday cake) but those aren't too much of a problem.

2)  Since starting this group, I've lost 13 pounds -- mostly autumn-holiday fat that I accumulated during my own personal anything-goes phase.  Now I'm lucky if I lose 1-2 pounds a month, but since it's goin in the right direction, I'm happy.  Only about eight pounds until I'm at goal anyway!

3)  I'm feeling great!  The only time I feel icky is if I'm going off of wagon, and then I'm not only lethargic but gassy, bleh!

4)  My family is gradually changing its eating habits, simply because the crud is generally not around.  So they're doing better too.  It's taken a few years, but my kids have lost a total of 165 pounds in the last two years -- mostly because Mom now cooks a different way!  So their habits are improving, too.  (Even the dog lost 15 pounds!)

LessieBelle posted, yesterday, that she had lost 11 pounds in this round of Atkins-ing, and that she's feeling better, to boot.  I appreciated seeing that.

This group has been around for not-quite two months, and I was wondering how the low-carb way of eating has impacted each of you in that time.  So, I'm generating a few questions and would love to hear from our members:

1)  How well have you modified your way of eating to the low-carb/Atkins profile?

2) Have you experienced any weight change, and how?

3)  How are you feeling, now that you're eating a different way?

4)  What impact, if any, does this way of eating have on your family?

LessieBelle, this gives me a good idea for a thread I'd like to start -- About our various successes and disappointments using low-carbing, since this group started.  Eleven pounds seems like a huge accomplishment to ME!  It's great to find you're feeling better, too.

The new Atkins book was very informational and motivational for me.  The very technical Good /Bad book was a monstrosity to plough through -- think I read about evbery other word -- but very interesting nontheless.  Still waiting for my turn at the newer Taubes book, from the library.

Chocolate cheese is a great deal like fudge, unfortunately.  I could have made an entire career of eating that, and nothing but (except I would have weighed a ton as it contains a huge amount of sugar.)

If you reread your post ... Omigosh, Paul, it is taking a huge amount of restraint not to respond with the obvious.  But the next time my husband is feeling romantic, I will think about offering him some salted butter with Stilton on a Ryvita.

Topic: Saturday CARb Accountability Roundup == Weekend Edition
Hey there everybody!

The nicest thing happened to us last night, some friends invited the whole family over for dinner at the last moment, and it was a tremendously relaxing, pleasant, delightful atmosphere with the most amazing selection of home made foods ever!  Hoping to secure another invite again, some time soon!

One of the best dishes was an outstanding olive/garlic spread, and I'm going to be tackling the hostess and throwing myself at her feet to get that recipe.  It's primarily olives and fresh garlic -- How low-carb is THAT likely to be!  Mmmmmmmmmm

Anyway, this is MY plan for the day:

Pamper, pamper, pamper.  I have a stack of  reading about a foot and a half high, and I'm planning to spend a rainy weekend enjoying ALLof it!

My eating plan for the day:

B:  Coffee with eggs hollandaise: poached eggs, spinach, hollandaise, and smoked salmon
S:  Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries -- a perk of living in S. California is that we have fresh berries all year long!
L:  Borscht with smoked edam
S:  Tuna salad
D:  Roasted chicken with asparagus and kabocha squash

Hi, Donna!

I myself had a circumferential panniculectomy (sp?) a year and a half ago.  It really is a huge surgery, and I can absolutely appreciate your anxiety.  I'm even going to tell you that your worry is not entirely unfounded, because in my case, there was 100" of cutting (maybe more), 50" of suturing, 9 lbs of flesh removed, and untold quantities of lipo.  Sometimes I reflect back on what I did, and get scared in retrospect, about the risk I took.

It's a big deal.  A VERY big deal!   You are taking a calculated risk, and that should not be entered into lightly!

However, you have done your research, right?  Now, research is no guarantee against catastrophe, but it helps you determine whether or not you are making a good decision.  My guess is, you should feel confident about the rationale behind the choice to have surgery, the location of the surgery, and the surgeon himself/herself.

SO!  If you are, indeed, going to have a panniculectomy, now is the time to prepare your body.  You are going to increase your protein to about 1 gram per day for every pound of weight you think you should be, because that's appropriate for healing from this kind of wound.  You are NOT going to focus on worrying about weight gain right now, because the major issue will be healing.  And you are going to rigorously adhere to your vitamin and medication regimine.

Any antibiotics you are to take in advance of the surgery, you will take.  And you're going to be extra good to yourself by mothering your body.  Your mom probably wouldn't let you go on a junky carb eating binge now, would she?  If you have kids, YOU wouldn't let them do that, right?  And you would make sure your children get plenty of rest, keep regular hours, and that people treat them well.

Those are the things you should do for yourself.

Right now!

Being scared is reasonable.  Falling back into old comfort eating is not unusual.  Now for the swift kick in the @$$:  Neglecting protein and supplements is the opposit of what your body needs for healing after surgery.

You can't predict the outcome so worry is understandable.    You can prepare yourself mentally and physically for the best possible outcome.  Think realistically about complications and de stress.  Eat well, exercise, prepare by careing for yourself.

In addition to protein at each meal, my wls surgeon has patients on two shakes a day and a double dose of vits and other supplements to promote healing.  Also, staring 48 hrs pre op I showered with an oc anticeptic soap from the pharmacy as instructed by the hospital's surgical coordinator to reduce the chance of infection.

Look how far you've come.  Prepare body, mind, spirit.  You'll get through this too.

About 30 net again - not loosing in droves, but since January 1, have lost the 11 that I picked up during the holidays.  Feel much better - no carb coma.

Still need to get off the couch - I think that is pretty key to getting the last 10-20 off - hmmmmmm.

Going to go get the new atkins book so that I can refer to it and read it regularly - I do better with the reminder -  it is inspiration.  Also want to pick up the "layman" terms Taubes book (Why we get fat) - I read the big book he wrote and kind of drown in the big words, many have suggested reading the other.

Take 3 ozs stilton and 1oz cream and blend until you get a pale blue butter consistency.  The smellier the stilton the better!  Ryvitas are rye crispbreads, mainly fibre, but I particularly like the ones with sesame or pumpkin seeds.  If you really want decadence then spread a good salted butter on the Ryvita first, then the Stilton butter.  An ****** in your mouth!  You can also spread it on a steak, mix with cooked mushrooms or even put it in a baked potatoe if you want the carbs as well.

What was the chocolate cheese like?

Oh, donna, after all you went through with the VSG, no one can blame your emotions.

I had the lbl in September, though, and let me give you the encouragement / swift kick that you are needing. First, do know that they should not be entering into your stomach cavity with a panni removal surgery; so your chances for a leak are very slim. However, this is one major surgery with lots of cutting, and you will need lots of healing. That takes PROTEIN!!!! In fact, I had a lbl in September, and my plastics doc had me up my protein to no less than 100 grams 1 month pre; and about 1 month post plastics to get in the protein that the body will need to heal. I also had to double vitamins--again building reserves for healing.

If you are not strength training, especially abs and thighs; now is the time to really hop too because it will be valuable to for your mobility to be as strong as you can since there more than likely will be some stitches, cutting etc on the ab muscles. And you may find the increase in exercise will give you a venue for stress that will work better for you in the long run than carbs.

Donna, hang in there, make the best choices for your health! You can do this girl!
