I've eaten low carb for years and when I followed it to a t managed to maintain and sometimes loose weight. What I'm having problems with is that I was told after surgery (mine was 10-13-11) that I had to eat low carb AND low fat. I'd much rather eat low carb with real fats in moderation. I'd love to hear from others on how you eat, what you eat, and how it's working for you! Thanks!!

low carb, moderate fat - good fats and high proteins.
Good fats - are as natural as you can get them, including butter, oils, cream.

I was at a loss on this too, until my surgeon put me in contact with the nutritionist he uses. Her advice was that during weight loss we don't eat grains/fruits/or other higher carb items. (She does recommend fruit and whole grains once we reach maintenance weight). Her advised carbs were leafy green and other low starch veggies, and although higher in carbs she recommends a daily serving (1/4 cup - 1/2 cup) of beans of any kind.

She advised me to eat VERY high protein (up to 200g!) during weight loss (to be cut back after maintenance) in the form of lean meats and cheeses, seafood, eggs, cottage cheese, greek yogurt and whey protein shakes (as my surgeon still recommends for his RNYers even years out).

She is PRO fat, the right kinds. She advises me to eat 1/4 cup of raw nuts daily, up to 1/2 cup raw seeds (sunflower, flax, chia, pepitas, etc), and 2 tablespoons of unsweetened/natural peanut butter daily. In addition she recommends up to an avocado daily! (I don't eat that much, just because I'm in active weight loss and find it's just too many carbs, but I do eat half of one daily). She recommends good oils like olive and grapeseed oils. She didn't say much on cream or butter, but I use both in MODERATION. My grandmother always used to say, "A little bit of what God made is surely better food for you than a whole lot of the chemicals man makes and calls food." And I agree!

I also drink at least 3 litres of water daily. I have lost 25 pounds in two months (a lot at first with water weight, and about 5 pounds a month since) following this advice. I should mention I'm over 3 years post op, not early out. So I'd say, go fat! Just use saturated fat in great moderation.

Oh boy, somehow I missed how early out you are! LOL So of course what my nut told me won't work for you. Right now, you need to focus on protein protein protein! The rest will come in time. Don't worry too much about anything else, and fats could cause you some tummy issues (diahhrea, etc) this early out. But tuck away that info for later down the road! Best of luck to you...you are in a good place right now...oh to be there again! Enjoy it!!

I love the nut at my surgeon's office, but she gave me similar advice (mod carb + low fat) which did not work out -- Frankly, if you're going to eat enough calories to be satisfied, and if they aren't coming from fat, then they will  have to be coming from more carbs.

This was the source of my dietary disaster that began last summer.

Your surgery is very, very new.   My faith is in following your Dr's nut's advice early out -- to a T.  But I can tell you that the only way I can lose or maintain a proper weight is wtih high protein and nearly null carbs.

Interested in low-carb nutrition?  Thinking of trying Atkins? Want to try high-fat and/or high-protein eating?  Whether or not you have had (or are thinking about) WLS   http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/atkins/

BTW: I wish i followed my own advise right from surgery and not my nut. I probably would still have my GB. but with a very limited food and low fat - my GB filled with bile that slowly turned into sludge... and had to be taken out... if I ate some healthy fat first few months pot op - I probably would do great.
low fat diet may cause bile accumulation in the GB... and if we do not eat fat - the body keeps all the bile... and it gets thicker and thicker... and before you know it.... the GB is full of it... and can't process it ...
IMO - please keep good fats... in moderation..but they are so healthy.. and your skin will show that.
Now I use butter, cream, coconut oil, gee (for saute and frying) and love that.  And can keep my weight off... nuts are great as snack...
