Hi, New to the group.

Hello everyone
I just joined the group. Due to RH (reactive hypoglycemia) post op RNY I had to adapt low carb style. Even "good carbs" are not too good for me. Slowly I learn to eliminate most grains, starchy carbs, starchy and sugary fruits, milk, and anything that may affect my blood sugar. Getting really low  BS level (below 40) is not fun and the effects of that last from a few hours to few days.  Best for me is to try to avoid that.  Being carb addict – I cant just have a bite… and more than one bite of high carb food will bring my sugar down.  Best for me to stay away from that.

Protein and fat are my friends and carbs – well, even in combination with protein and fats carbs usually cause RH in me.  There are some that I can tolerate very well, and the are green, non starchy veggies, some fruits (mostly berries), carbs in nuts etc.  At the same time – too much fat make me nauseas so I try to eat low carb, high protein, high fiber, mid level fat – diet.

I chose to use cream or almond milk in my coffee, do not use regular milk, and stay away from skim milk.  Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, cheeses, meats, fish, and veggies are my staple.  I will have some low carb wraps once in a while… and they are a great source of fiber and some substitution or bread.

A quick recipe – modifying a canned soup to be a good meal for me: (high protein low carb)

Ingrediance:

·        Low carb canned soup (one with less than 15 gr of carbs per 1 cup serving)

·        Cooked chicken breast 3-4 oz per serving  (I use frozen chicken breast I cooked or buy canned chicken breast)

·        Spices. (I use ginger, pepper, cayenne, etc.)

·        1-2 tbs flax meal

Open a can and dump the soup into a pan.  (btw – if the soup has potatoes I usually pick them out and discard – same with noodles). Add spices to taste. Shred the chicken and dump into the soup.  (you can also use some beef or turkey or tofu).  Boil everything together (or microwave).

Place the flax meal into a bowl and pour the soup over that. Stir and let sit for 3-5 min.  Enjoy.

The flax meal adds some good fats and fiber.  And makes the soup thicker so it is a meal and will make me full for a while. Also helps with constipation …down the road.

My favorite soup is the Progresso Light Beef Pot Roast: can=2 servings, 80 cal, 2gr fat, 10gr carbs (but 2 gr fiber= 8 gr net carbs) 7 gr protein. When I mix that with my chicken I end up with 2 large servings, each one app 230 cal each, 35 gr of proteins, 8 gr net carbs.  (but since I do remove most potato chunks  out of the soup – the carb load of my soup is probably 5-6 net carbs.

Hala!  I remember this name from other boards, seems to me you generated some kind of famous recipe -- grr that I can't remember it -- is that you?!?!

VERY nice to have you aboard!

I have been reading about reactive hypoglycemia here and there via MeltingMama, and it sounds like a great challenge.  Wish there was more research about this sometime-consequence to RnY.  Do you read much about this happening after other WLS?

We are very glad to have you here!

Yes. I did some of them.. always trying to make the recipe less carbs and more proteins fat.

RH i s very common post op RNY.  I think a lot of people have - some just less "reactive" than others.  Some do not know they have it - i.e. they get really hungry after carby meal - and never check their blood sugar level.  I think RH is responsible for a lot of regains - and carb addiction.
I would rather dump (I do - on too much sugar) than to have the RH episode.
Now when I look at foods - the question is not if I dump... but if I can get RH after that.  (complex  carbs). I would not even eat a whole large apple anymore.  maybe can have half, or a bite of 2.

I noticed that I can have some fruits ... but only after a meal... and never in the morning...
