Ever Heard of "Atkins Flu?"

Hi All!

How is everybody doing? This is my second day on the Induction Phase. I've kind of been dragging a little yesterday and today. I did read on the Atkin's Website that sometimes in the first few days you might have some symptoms as if you have the flu. Yesterday I felt tired and achey. Today I was sluggish and really hungry. I probably didn't eat as much as I should have.I'm sure hoping the high-energy level will come for me soon! Then I can get lots of housework done! LOL

I've been researching a lot of low-carb recipes online. I'm trying to find easy and fewer ingredients. I think once I start exploring some new recipes it will help a lot, too.I'm also on the hunt for crock pot recipes, as well. Do any of you happen to know of a cookbook that would use a small amount ingredients, and possibly even some crock recipes?

Thanks for reading! I appreciate all of your kind responses and wonderful advice!

Yes, I know all about the 'Atkins flu'...lol!!! My DH is experiencing it right now (headache and fatigue). When I first go into ketosis I actually feel very energetic right away and find it hard to sleep which is also very normal and common.

As far as recipes with a few ingredients and crock pot meals, I haven't seen too many (sorry). I did find a website with a lot of recipes and there are some crockpot ones in it too - lowcarbcafe.com.

Have a good evening :)

Jean,
Make sure to tell your DH he's not alone! LOL How many days has he been on the Atkins? My body seriously had the aches just like the flu yesterday! LOL  How many days does it take for the ketosis to set in?

Thanks for the suggestion on the website! I will check it out!

Janie :)

I start going into ketosis within just a couple days of keeping my carbs below 25g/day...my body responds pretty quickly but everyone is different. My DH is on day 3 of induction. Hang in there and make sure you're getting enough sodium because the body will deplete itself of sodium and potassium, especially when you first start cutting the carbs. I learned this from reading the Atkins and Protein Power books, they both suggest drinking a couple cups of broth.

Anyway, I hope this helps :)

If you're willing to wait a few days, Amazon has them cheap! Otherwise, any book store should have them in stock.

Atkins - www.amazon.com/New-Atkins-You-Ultimate-Shedding/dp/143919027 5/ref=sr_1_1

Protein Power - www.amazon.com/Protein-Power-High-Protein-Low-Carbohydrate-H ealth--/dp/0553380788/ref=sr_1_1

Atkins is very easy to read and understand, Protein Power is more in depth and can easily go over your head (at least mine)  but does go into a lot of detail on the how and
whys.

Have a good day!

Thank you so much for posting this!  I am currently at day 14 of Induction, and while I have satisfactorily lost about 14 pounds, the Induction Flu has been hitting me pretty hard!

As your body switches from burning carbs, to burning FAT, you might begin to feel pretty crummy.  I myself was lightheaded, achey, groggy, and forgetful.  I really don't need any help with forgetting things, and this was a huge problem!

If you have had WLS, you might remember feeling this way the first few days after surgery, and attributed some of it to the procedure.  You were right, but some of that awful feeling was also the process of entering benign dietary ketosis.

One of the best solutions is to drink some full-sodium broth -- I use chicken or miso. This is my favorite brand:

Eden Foods Organic Soybean Hacho Miso 12.1 Ounce

To make this, you take a couple of teaspoons of miso paste and blend it with a cup of ho****er to make a broth.  It's exactly like the soup you get at the beginning of a Japanese meal in a restaurant.

To some degree, how badly you feel during Carb Detox is a measure of how far "off the rails" you were before starting Atkins.  This is not much of a consolation, but I can assure you that the feeling does pass.

Unless of course you really DO have the flu (if there's any fever, might want to call the doctor!).

Interested in low-carb nutrition?  Thinking of trying Atkins? Want to try high-fat and/or high-protein eating?  Whether or not you have had (or are thinking about) WLS   http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/atkins/

Hello! Thank you for responding! :) That is wonderful you have lost 14 lbs. already! I like to go on the  Atkins website and read some of their discussions. This is where I heard of the " Atkins Flu." LOL
I think you "hit-the-nail-on-th head" when it comes to how much carbs I was eating prior to the diet. I bet my carb count was off the charts! I had picked up some bad, old habits! So I really think that' why I feel like this. It's gotten a little bit better. This is day three for me. I did read on Atkins website that some people have the Atkins Flu for a pretty long period of time when starting. I hope you start feeling better soon, and getting your energy back. When I was eating so many carbs, I was tired all the time. When I follow this, I am simply not hungry. When I do eat the carbs, it just makes me hungrier and hungrier, and all I can think about all day is food!
That soup sounds very good. I will have to look for it. Keep up the good work! :)

Yeah, the carb detox is horrible! Just think how bad those food are for you to make you actually go through withdrawal without them. That alway****s me really hard. It's like a drug, ya know?
