When Do We Start? Or Do We Start Now? :)

Hi everyone!
I am really excited to get started with this. I have gained back nearly 75 lbs,. and I am very upset with myself. I did the Atkins not all that long ago for a couple of weeks, but it seemed so complicated because there were others in the house to cook for.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can cook Atkins way, but my other family members can eat it, too? I'm getting ready to start nursing school Jan. 3rd so I am getting really nervous about the eating situation. Everyone else in the household are adults. Should I just have them fend for themselves?

My suggestion is always "start the next time you eat."

Look further down on the cooking in bulk thread, maybe that will be helpful some.  Maybe you can get some of your grown folk to be helpful, especially since you are going to have a big load with nursing school.  Maybe you can bulk cook some things/meats one day a week and put some of it up (in the freezer) and then have the other folks help to "put together and plate" the meals?

I also talk about containering up meals and having them ready so when faced with "what to eat" I already know the answer.

You have got to set yourself up for success my love, because your big ol platter waiting for you and just life in general can be overwhelming. The more you can "automate" so you do not have to think about it, even if it takes a chunk of time one day, the less time wasted with being overwhelmed and wasting time while you try and get your bearings!!  Think of it as an investment on the front end.

Good luck girlie!

I have to agree with Brandylynn -- the best time to start is the next time you eat something!

Jane, I am blessed with a large family, by most standards.  Currently eight people in my household!  One won't eat fish, one won't eat beef, one is vegan, one can't have dairy.

Sooooooooo ., ., ., ., in reaity the Atkins diet and a mean-mom attitude get me through a lot.  First of all, I rarely make casseroles; secondly I hardly ever put bread on the table.  Each meal consists of a protein dish, and two vegetables -- one is green, the other yellow or red.  In the evening, I try to serve a whole grain, and people are free to make themselves a sandwich on whole grain bread, if they choose.

The food is still delicious, but this way there is always something for everyone.

Most of the time, this helps improve the health of the family, too.  I can tell you that since I first went on Atkins (eight years ago), My two oldest children have lost a combined 155 pounds, and even the dog got leaner and healthier.

Atkins-style eating is truoy healthy for the whole family.

It is very exciting that you are starting nursing school!!!  There are several nursing students and nurses in this group -- we should find out who!
Interested in low-carb nutrition?  Thinking of trying Atkins? Want to try high-fat and/or high-protein eating?  Whether or not you have had (or are thinking about) WLS   http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/atkins/

Hi Jane,

I have three teenage boys and a husband at home. We all eat the same things except I'll add pasta, bread, or potatoes for the boys. My husband eats what I eat primarily and he and I share cooking duty.  So every lunch and dinner includes meat of some kind, and lots of vegetables. I love this new way of eating. It's very convenient and delicious! Also, it's okay to let the others fend for themselves if they don't like what you're having. It's okay to put yourself first!

I use my crock pot a couple of times a week and have ingredients on hand for quick meals.

You can do it! Don't beat yourself up about the weight you've gained back. It'll come off again. I'm having great success with Atkins and you will too!! The hardest part for me was the first few days. My body went through carb withdrawal and I had horrible cravings and was pretty irritable for a couple of days. It quickly passed and now I feel great, hungry at meal times, not always grazing throughout the day.

Good luck - and congratulations on nursing school!!
Peace & Love, Donna K.

I agree with the others, I usually just throw out meat and veggies for dinner and if hubby doesn't like it he knows where the frig is. I don't mean to sound like a meany but he's a big boy and is perfectly capable of fixing himself something to eat. If you are starting school now would be a great time for those adults to fend for themselve alot of the time. You'll need all your spare time for study. Best of luck to you!

Thanks all for the great input! I think I've spoiled them all! They all don't like the same things. I guess I'll try to fix meat of some kind in the crockpot, and then fix a veggie. They don't really like green veggies, but they can always put a baked potato in the microwave. I started Atkins today. I am really excited.

Well the GREAT thing is any learned habit (being spoiled) can be unlearned!  :}

I am excited for you girlie!

Usually for meals with the family I cook a meat dish that is low carb, a suitable veggie for me (and them) and then in addition for them maybe a baked potato or rice or pasta.
