pre surgery question

HI,
I'm in the pre surgery stage 4-5 months in. I'm looking for suggestions on how to keep motivated.   How have you mentally prepared for surgery?  Did you exercise or did you wait for surgery?
Thanks

I exercised and watch my intake. I upped my protein and lower carbs so the new way of eating would be more natural because I was used to it. I started the program at 409 lbs and on surgery day I was at 363. Motivation is knowing...truly knowing that this will change your life. Motivation is thinking about getting your life back in your own hands and YOU decide where you go and what you do, not your weight. I gained my freedom from myself. I no longer look at what i can't do, but instead look forward to what I can do. I work out at the gym 4 days a week and lead a much much more active lifestyle. I can't express in words what it feels like to KNOW I have control back. It is not easy and yes there is pain after surgery, but I can say that I would do it 100 times again to get what I have now. I am currently plateaued at 265, which is 200 lbs from my highest weight. I am almost a year out of surgery for the RNY. It will go slower and be more normal weight loss now, but even when I am not losing weight i am shaping up and feeling better and stronger all the time. I prepared mentally for surgery by setting goals to achieve before surgery and after surgery. I helped my friends understand what I was going through and also clarified in my mind what I wanted with every new explanation. If you do nothing else try to work your abs. I don't know your specifics, but even doing minimal crunches in bed on a regular basis will help you to heal from the surgery. They cut or push through those muscles and if they are in better shape they heal faster. I am not talking six pack or anything..lol. I know that having worked those muscles before surgery helped me a ton. I was out of pain in 3 days and in two weeks was back at work because I healed rather quickly. This is like anything else in your life, properly nurtured it will become exactly what you want it to be. See it for the tool that it is and start preparing yourself now, to work with the new tool you will be getting. Read as much information about your procedure as you can. Inform yourself about food, what it does for you and how it can hurt your goals. Manage your intake of food, increase your exercise and even if its just little tiny improvements. Keep them coming and always move one step forward. pausing is ok and don't kick yourself too much if you aren't on your game every minute, but never lose sight of your goal and you will always get back to the right track. My twenty cents worth and just my own observations.

Thanks for the wonderful reply Rodney.  I am exercising in a limited way.  I've got the stat. bicycle up to 3.5 miles.  I need to be more consistent with it during the week.  Hey, that.'s a new goal for me!  I also like the idea of ab work.  That's a  great suggestion.

Anything you do is better than nothing and you just made a reachable short term goal :). Its important to stay focused on why you are doing this, because its all too easy to be distracted from where you want to be. Glad to hear you are able exercise. A piece of information that helped me a long time back. 1 pound of fat is 3500 calories, if you removed as little as 500 calories a day, its worth 1 pound of fat loss per week. Look at what you may be eating and drinking for a source to cut back on, if intake is an issue. Removing sugared drinks, if you havent already, can easily take care of 500 calroies a day for many folks. Changing up your workout can help with F.I.T. Over the course of time our body gets used to the load it bears and stop working as much to do so. If we change any of the F.I.T. parts we help our body work the muscles or burn more fat. Instead of going 3.5 miles, you could try 1.5 miles at a faster rate for a few days. Hihg reistance settings increase muscle, lower resistance settings help to burn calories.Things that change any of the FIT properties help your body become more efficient at burning calories. How often, How Hard, and How long you workout even if those are reduced a little, then expanded back to normal for you, can make a difference.

Good Luck,

Rodney

Hello Jan, I started walking a lot more then I used to.  I did this to try to get used to walking.  I am not even 2 weeks out yet, but I have a lot more energy then I used to.  What kept me prepared was wanting it so badly.  I knew I wanted this surgery, but it seemed to take forever.  I started at the end of September, and had my surgery 7/6/10.  I guess you could say I was so upset it was taking so long it made time fly by (If that makes any sense). Anyhow the weight was worth it.  Dr. Hill was amazing, and he is just an awesome doctor all around!  I did not meet Dr. Moon, but I am imagining that since he is affiliated with Dr. Hill he is just as good.  Good luck to you in journey, and I am always around if you have any questions :)

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the encouragement.
Today I had the behavior Mod class so things are moving along.  I'm beginning to incorporate small changes that will make the after surgery easier. So far so good.
Thanks again.
