Wonderful question. Remember you are having major surgery and everyone response different to surgery. That being said, I can tell you how things were for me after surgery and some things to keep in mind. Since you are having major surgery it is very important to blood clots are form from lack of moving of blood in your body. Thus, it is important to move around as move as possible but continue to get rest. There was some minor discomfort for me during the first week, however, it was mainly gas not the actual surgery. I got up and moved around at least every 2 hours. I would get up and move more frequently as the week went on. Now, things have changed a little since I have had my surgery, I came home on liquid diet. I am a firm believer in making sure that proper liquid intake is considered first then work in protein each day. Work closely with the staff about recommended amounts of liquid and protein at certain phases of the recovery. READ THE PACKET THE STAFF PROVIDES YOU. Remember you have major surgery and you will feel full quickly. It gets better each day just don't over do it. I am sure you both will do great. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

I experienced acid reflux for the first 9 months after surgery. Then it just went away one day. Now I rarely experience it. Other than that, it has been smooth sailing.
My highest weight was 307 on 03/27/10. I weighed 303 on the day of surgery - 03/30/10. I now weigh 165. I'm now at a normal BMI. I would like to lose 15 more pounds, but I'm not stressing over how fast that happens. I'm happy where I'm at now, so if it takes 6 months to get the last 15 off... no problem.
My surgeon is Dr. Richards.... Dr. Richards is no longer a surgeon with Vanderbilt. He has moved on to to operate and teach bariatric surgery to up and coming surgeons at another hospital.. Not sure where. If you happen to live in the part of the country where Dr. Richards is you should run and sign up with him as soon as possible before it is too late..LOL
In light of my medical history my surgeon decided it was best for *me* to have the Roux-en-Y procedure. As a result of this decision that my surgeon and I agreed upon I was asked to consider the following possibilities:
1. For the rest of my life, I would be at a slight risk for intestinal obstruction. *considering I was currently dying a slow miserable death, this was a risk that seemed to be a no brainer..*
2. You have to modify your diet. *Oh my, this was a tough one.*
3. You may experience more-frequent bowel movements. *I am a southern belle. Southern belle's do not have discussions about these sort of things because they do not have these sort of things.*
4. You may experience nutritional deficiencies and, therefore, you have to take nutritional supplements for the rest of your life. *Oh, no.. I want to talk to the person in charge.. I was under the impression that I could get off all my pills and eliminate the cost of pills...*
5. You may experience dumping syndrome if you eat something too high in sugar or fat. *This is a tool that Trina will need. Yes, we all agree that Trina needs this..*
As a result of having Weight Loss Surgery, I have lost 165 pounds. And not only did I lose 165 pounds I have kept that weight loss off for over 5 years.
Yes, I have had issues... Depending on who you ask and what day you ask them will determine the response you will receive about my issues... LOL... But on a more serious note... Yes, I have had issued... Please ask away and I will be happy to share my issues..
Thank you Terri for opening up such an awesome forum for people like us that can share things that are so personal in such a safe environment..
I luv ya sweetie....
