I think it was easier in our time (maybe down to age 40 or 50) to make our way without college. My brother has worked as an engineer with only some college. My BIL always ended up as a manager in the factories where he worked with no college. Mike's oldest sister has had a good banking career. Though she couldn't be a branch manager (didn't want to anyway), she has done well and supported her family successfully. I'm not sure that is as possible for 20 and 30 something's these days.
