I will admit, it took me a long time to forgive that. A really nice, very young ICU nurse saw that I was alone and I think was horrified that my dad had left. She came in and sat with me and explained what was happening with my mom's breathing and the monitors and held my hand tightly. I didn't know her name, but 11 years on, I am still profoundly thankful for her presence.

This all touches me in so many ways. Bless that nurse. And you. You have a lovely spirit Cecily, to express gratitude in the midst of an extremely difficult moment in your life.

Nurses and nurse practitioners in hospital settings really seem to understand how to cope with dying much better than physicians in my experience. I have had several times when they were able to bring clarity to a situation with the family or even the doctor in a very kind and compassionate way.

I am glad that nurse was able to invest time and care as your mom passed. My next youngest DS is a nursing supervisor in a palliative care residential home working in conjunction with Hospice. Her heart and spirit are so in sync with what is needed for a peaceful death. I agree, everyone deals with death differently and grace is needed to accept that. Being with fur babies and both parents when they passed were meaningful and memorable experiences...positive experiences. I needed this today !
