DD- "Never take the last one" rule? Never heard of or practiced in any school break room in my experience. The only break room demonstrating even greater food offensiveness.....Every detention center or jail/prison in existence! To leave your lunch, food of any kind was to risk losing it.!
So, DS#2 is snug and safe at home with us? Yah- No- and the saga continues. No words for this.
Christmas cookies are finished. With very few exceptions, this has been a yearly activity all the years of married life. Not so strangely, Kurt's creations are familiar reproductions that I have come to love and look forward to seeing.

Maybe never take the last one is a uniquely Minnesota rule? I always thought it held true for the Midwest. But this really does happen around here, frequently. If the last one does get taken, it's usually due to urging from others, or sometimes a spoken, well if no one else wants it, then I'm going to go ahead. This public announcement provides a type of dispensation. :) Of course there are the unmannerly sorts who flout these rules, and empty the communal candy dishes on desks when no one is around. To those, we look at each other and offer the damning judgement, well, he's a different sort of fellow or that's interesting. :)

I definitely see this in Michigan and among my family (midwest to CA transplants)! We've gotten to the point where we count everything out and say how much each person gets so there is no question of there being a "last one". But yes, eating an appetizer plate or serving platter down to one thing and then no one wanting to be the one to take it is very real in my world... usually I'm the one sitting on my hands to force myself not to take it!
It is a very southern rule, too! Ron's step mother would have rather spanked a child in public than be the person to take the last cookie off of a plate. Heaven help the child of hers that took the last of anything on a plate! It just was not done. I still insist that Ron and my BFF share the last appetizer on the table. Otherwise, it would sit there and get cold. Though Kevin has been known to take half a potsticker and leave the other half. LOL! He swears he thought my little box of chocolate had another layer. I called BS!
Being raised in a German household, as children we were encouraged to finish up what was offered. Interestingly, we were not allowed to ask for anything to eat when in public or visiting friends. It was considered horribly rude. The best story revolving around this rule was the time we were visiting my mom's German friend Gertrude. Gertrude made delicious cookies and always made my brother a milkshake as a snack. My brother was warned before hand that he was not allowed to ask or mention a treat while at Gertrude's. Well, we got there and after a few minutes my brother tugged on my mom's sleeve. She asked what he wanted. He replied, "I need to go home." "But, Bumpy, we just got here. Why do you need to go home?" "I am hungry Mama. I am hungry for cookies and a milkshake." My mom turned red from embarrassment. Gertrude laughed and smiled and made my brother a milkshake and brought us cookies.
Rules is funny things, ain't they?
