- I learned/relearned: Maintenance is a verb !
- Intentions: Seek balance & relax, rejuvenate, & recalibrate !!
Yup... maintenance is a verb, not a noun ! Maintenance is not a destination you reach and park, but a lifelong commitment of dedicated action. I certainly am reminded about that every day in terms of physical health, but didn't make the connection so quickly for mental health. 10+ years ago, I was graduated from a four year cycle of individual then group therapy. I did a lot of work around childhood sexual abuse and codependency, but when I was "released" I had no plan for how to maintain my growth and move forward. It reminds me of my previous experiences with Weigh****chers and other diets. I called "goal" and celebrated that I'd made it and moved on with life as I knew it. Maintenance is not a destination you reach and park, but a lifelong commitment of dedicated action. Yes, that goes for maintaining anything... a new skill, a habit and mental health. So easy to see in retrospect, but I've got my appointment with my therapist 09/20 and have a plan.
Congratulations on all of the anniversaries ! Liz and Ann, yours are bittersweet, I'm sure. Peps and DD, keep on loving the students who are most difficult to love ! David and Shirl, go easy as you try to get everything done ! Diane, so love the deck, chair and foliage as I picture you sipping coffee !

Maintenance is....a lifelong commitment of dedicated action.... Such clarity, such truth and such profundity! Damn!
Diane's thought on maintenance fits so nicely with how I've been feeling and my thoughts about my weight and myself lately. My shrink says it feels like I've hit another level of awareness, adding a sense of ease to my self acceptance and life. Hmmmm....
I've been working with her for I think 5 years now, so I am pleased about the gains I have made - especially over the past year.
There are so many, many positives that I can identify each day when I really stop to think about it. I am following Ann's lead and taking note of all the wonderful, positive things I am doing each day to make my life more positive, more focused on wholesome self care, and more tolerant, accepting, and welcoming of my daily shortfalls. There is a precept I read not too long ago that states something along the lines of, "I have not failed. I have simply found 1,000 ways that did not work." So, as long as I keep working on finding that way that does work, I am making progress. I am so far beyond the quick fix stage of this journey, it makes me smile.
I love feeling good in my skin again. I am not 100% satisfied with my appearance, or my physical flexibility, but I am quite far from the self loathing and shame I so regularly felt for so many years.
Another nutritious breakfast and lunch today. Exercise is on the calendar for later today. I haven't yet decided whether it will be legs or back and abs.... We shall see.
The weather is cooler today with a bit of a breeze. My mood is bright. And I am visiting puppies tonight. This is a good day!
Inner child testing the outside adult in me (day 3 of a much needed carb detox), but secretly glad she's being better care of. You are so right, Diane- Maintenance is a verb as is parenting, caring, showing up, and love...physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.
