--Longer than expected rant on daycare. Feel free to skip :) --

Yesterday turned out totally different from how I envisioned it. Becca went to Dr. in morning for her ear infection and, yep, still infected. I took her back to daycare and no sooner had I gotten home and fed the baby, did they call me, telling me she had all these things and I'd need to send her home. This was literally 90 minutes after she left Dr. I had told them that, plus I explained the ear infection. Nope, she'd need to be seen for other stuff. Called Dr. Doctor is like "we don't need to see her, we just saw her. All those symptoms are consistent with ear infection. Plus no fever when she was here, so not contagious." I was caught between a rock and a hard place. I even had the nurse on the phone while I was at the daycare. And of course this was all happening around 12, right before they took off for the day. Daycare wouldn't budge so I ended up hauling 2 kids back to the Dr. Yeah fun.

So here's the deal: I understand why daycares are cautious. They have a lot of kids and the last thing anyone needs or wants is outbreak of something. But I also think you have to be smart and make exceptions like when a kid literally JUST left the doctor's office. I think this was awfully close to the daycare thinking they could practice medicine, wanting to substitute their own opinions, prognoses for that of a physician's. And I told them so. And now I'm probably their least favorite person. I took Becca back and sure enough, just the ear. Obviously I was very happy that she didn't have anything else going on, plus I don't want the baby to maybe get it. But I was also very relieved to take that note up to daycare and tell them the signs they should look for next time they are "examining" children. How dare they!! My friend who uses the same daycare said that even after her doctor says that her child is cleared to go back to school and not contagious, they will make the child stay home for several more days. This is unacceptable! My doctor actually suggested that "hey it's Friday, you're short-staffed, you start looking for illness." I hate to be so cynical but...if the shoe fits. Obviously I'm pretty upset with the situation. Luckily I think we'll be quitting them soon anyway. My sister is in medical school and I've seen all the hoops she's gone through so far...not to mention rotations she'll be starting soon, residency, plus the 20+ years experience my doctor has.

Needless to say, yesterday was not very productive. And I found myself turning to crap food for soothing, and I think I even heard myself mutter "I deserve this." NO, Bonnie, what you deserve is not to spoil all that work you have done and that body you desire!

But luckily we were able to go to date night. We had a yummy dinner, I found my taste for wine again. Our tickets to Singin in the Rain were FABULOUS! I got 3rd row tickets that someone had turned back in. Best seats I've ever had at that venue! How can someone ever be sad when there's TAP DANCING?! We need more tap dancing to solve the world's problems. Maybe the debates can have some musical numbers?

I guess I'd want a daycare over zealous about health than unconcerned, but I can understand your frustration that they completely ignored the diagnosis you just received minutes before! Good theater changes everything for me. It's how I survive Minnesota winters :)

I'm with you - this is ridiculous since you had just been to the doctor. They have no right second-guessing the physician.
