I know. Hugs.

Pee is not such a big deal in the greater scheme of things. Puppies pee and sometimes, so do old dogs. It's part of the natural cycle of things. Breathe deeply. Give him some love. Let him love you back. It's all good.

I'm trying! I knew his diuretic could lead to accidents, but I thought those would be of the "I asked you to let me out, but you didn't get to me soon enough" variety. I didn't realize they could be the "wetting the bed" kind. Knowledge is power. So I will make sure he gets an extra potty break (though he has free access to the backyard, he sometimes needs an intentional leash-on potty excursion).

I had completely forgotten about the diuretic. Yes, those meds will cause unintentional release in older, unwell dogs. As his body adjusts, he will have less urgency and more control.

I take my older girl and my younger pup out late every evening to potty before bed. The 2 - 5 year olds don't need it, but the 10 month old and the 10 year old do. Even so, Keira often wakes me between 4 and 5 to be let out. Like her human dad, age has taken a toll on bathroom habits and getting through the night without a potty break i**** and miss!

I'm so sorry - it is so hard when our babies get to this point.

Cecily, I gaurentee that if I had a strong gag episode, I'd likely piddle all over the floor, too. Try not to worry so very much- Ferg knows and trusts truly that you are there for, and will take care of him- Love will cover all. No minimizing this- it is a sad and anxious time- no shame in your loving tears.

I hesitate to say it, but in this group I will. Animals are so much easier (so loving and thankful) at the end of their days than many people are. Enough said. Hug Fergus and help him feel loved.

You're so right, Liz! Very little is complicated about animals. They adore you and are adored. They ask for almost nothing and are appreciative of everything. No mean words, no fighting you, nothing but love. And when they've had enough, we have a way to take away their suffering. Humans make everything harder.

What Cecily said, but also, dogs are not afraid of dying. There is an acceptance about failing health that comes naturally to them. It is part of their natural cycle. I think we humans are one of the only creatures, if not the only, that fights even when we know it is our time.
