I had to dig thru my history for this sativa vs indica article. still more to learn about the science
I thought it interesting that the botany science lags "the feels".....but, still not surprising since there has been little to no funding for marijuana science. I'm hoping Canada will lead the way since it is now legal nationally.

Shel, I'm really digging that article. Fascinating stuff. And yes, there can never be too much science.
I admit my own "science" really is purely anecdotal. To my knowledge, the considerable amount of grass I smoked in graduate school (1969-1972) almost always came with munchies. Even worse, it eventually diminished my motivation to work on my dissertation, which is why I stopped smoking in 1972 so I could finish my dissertation, graduate, and get on with real life. And I never smoked again.
... until about three years ago, when I retired. Although marijuana is certainly not a habit for me. In fact, I've vaped or eaten some version of THC (supplied by others) only three or four times. And these experiences have been NOTHING like my 60s-70s trips. Absolutely ZERO munchies. Just mind-racing, too-many-interesting-thoughts-to-ever-express-them-in-this-time/space, dance-all-night, I'm-never-leaving-the-House-of-Blues evenings. And for several days afterward, I've felt mellow, although have observed no diminished motivation to exercise, read, study, wash the dishes, etc.
In that Slate article, the CEO of Green Dragon (a Colorado marijuana dispensary) describes my observed differences quite accurately:
For Levine, classifying weed strains is an art, not a science. The process is pretty simple: smoke or ingest the weed, observe if one feels more like sprawling out on the couch or coming up with wild theories about the way life works, apply a label accordingly. What he cares about is what his customers care about: that subjective end effect. "This feeels like indica, this feeels like sativa," he says of the process.
So yes, Canada, come on! Do the science! :)

It is fascinating watching the industry grow. I know someone whose PhD parents left their white collar jobs to grow pot in Oregon. I can't remember what their PhD's were in....not botany but something akin. It sounds like they are applying their science smarts as best they can. She said also said all of the plants are pampered and look like something you would see in garden magazines. Fancy Pot.
I wish our University Agriculture Departments could get after it without fear of federal retaliation. Maybe Canada's equivalent will fill the void but I worry that Phillip Morris/Coke a Cola et al will end up owning the science.

You have me pegged! But, that doesn't mean that the science won't catch up to the folk lore.

Hello all,
I shall go back and catch up on posts later this evening.
Cecily, I thought about you this weekend as I hiked thru rather dark forest It is nothing like the bright sun you are enjoying. Because I am me, I zoomed in on your hiking shoes and couldn't help but notice how great your legs look!
I know I have said this a million times but I LOVE seeing the ABLE in all of us! You are all so amazing.
But, Cecily, I scoff at your hat hair. It is perfect! It even has a nice part! I am posting a pic of real hiking hat hair. I had already changed into a different top and happened to look at my hair before I covered it up with a post-hike hat. I NEVER take selfies but was compelled to photograph the rat's nest. I may not keep this pic up forever so enjoy while you can.
Mailbox peak is now assessable (ie, no longer an avalanche risk.) I knew from past experience that it is harder than what I have been doing for the last few months but, geez Louise, yesterday was epic. It started with massive rain and wind on I90 (while the radio said that there was sun in Seattle) and I missed the exit as I struggled a bit with controlling the car (hydroplaning? sustained wind gust?). Anyhoo, the base of Mailbox didn't have wind (so safe to hike) but there was a lot of rain. That turned to some sort of weird sleet that looked like styrofoam and then finally to snow.
I use the "Old" Mailbox trail. It was replaced by a new trail and the old trail is no longer maintained by the state. Its slippery steepness is what makes it an excellent conditioning hike for wannabe mountaineers. I don't think much about the 40 lb pack except when it comes to balance as I navigate mud, slush and sliding rocks. Also, the hike has spots where I struggle to hoist my short legged fat azz up to the next step. On the way down, I ended up on my butt on a slip and slide section. No one saw so I was fine.
Last night I wasn't sure if I would return to Mailbox today but (as a friend of mine said) really there was no question. Of course I did. I even wore my sucky mountain boots. Weather was better. No new snow but with warmer weather there were snow bombs falling from the trees. Trail just as uneven and messy. I didn't fall today but still a muddy mess at the end.
Do something new...get a little messy. It is good for the soul,
Shel

Your hair is gravity defying - love it! Mine was totally sweaty keeping it plastered to my forehead from the 90 degree temps. Thanks for the leg kind words! Hiking calves make skinny jeans and boots fit weird, but they look pretty good with a tan. Now though I have bright white feet, brown legs from ankles to above my knees and pasty white from there up.
I'm striped like the sandstone cliffs of Utah...
Keens fit me best. I tried some Teva boots recently and they gave me blisters on my big toes. Too narrow.
Your rainy hike sounds crazy! I'm endlessly amazed by you...
Geez Louise, indeed! Shel, you really do knock my socks off. Your tale of the weekend's two Mailbox Peak hikes is awe-inspiring. I know that some people use that term to describe Victoria's Secret panty sales, but your hiking and mountaineering exploits are what "awe-inspiring" was meant to mean.
And YOU and your Mailbox Peak hair are just lovely.
I am so proud to know you. And I tell people you'll never meet about you. BTW, I tell people all y'all will never meet about ALL Y'ALL. Never your names. Just your victories. And the funny stories.
