Weight 122.6 (up 2). Geez I know I had a lot of carbs on Friday and a lot of water and way too much sodium yesterday, but I still hate to see my weight up when I stayed on my plan yesterday and only had 726 calories. I do know yesterday's weight is a little lower and today's a little higher than my true weight so I'll deal.

I am leaving in 2 minutes to drive SIL to the airport (20 minutes away). I'll miss her, but not. We still have another 17 days until we fly home for Christmas.

Have to go, but may check in later. Have a sunny Sunday!

Liz, thanks for starting us off this morning! :)

This post is a medical report.

I did NOT go to the ER yesterday for my eye, but waited until the middle of last night to do so, because why go in the daylight when you can drive there with impaired vision in the dead of night on country roads with deer moving. Sheesh!

Short story - just before midnight I woke up with an eye that felt worse than when I went to bed. So kicking myself for not having an MD look at this yesterday, I got up, made coffee, packed a to-go kit sufficient for a two-week hospital stay, and drove to the ER where there were ZERO patients waiting to see a doctor (thank you, Jesus!).

The ER doctor told me that my optometrist's treatment of my eyelid allergy (infection?) of a topical steroid and neomycin was "not the current protocol." Instead, he gave me a monster butt shot of super-penicillin (he actually called it "gorilla-cillin"), an Rx for the oral antibiotic Augmentin, and instructions NOT to wear contacts 'til my poor eyelids/eye heal up.

He said the redness and swelling around my eye "will probably go down in three days," just in time for an event on Tuesday night where 100+ people will wish me Happy Birthday.

And in response to a very specific question from me, he said that neither my eye condition nor these new drugs will keep me from drinking alcohol in Chicago during Birthday Week. :)

I got home at 2:45 a.m., watched Netflix for a couple of hours, got up and made more coffee.

Oh, and I decided NOT to drive to Chicago and to fly instead. Duh!

I'm glad you had another doctor take a look, but what bad timing! Yes, flying vs. driving sounds like a good idea. I used to get infections on my eyelids once in a great while from contact lenses. I was also allergic to one of the preservatives in them. Sounds like your lid got irritated by the allergy, but then the lid became infected where it was raw? Those are heavy duty antibiotics (at least they used to consider them as such), so hopefully they will do the trick. They did tell you to take the augmentin with food, correct? DS used to get it all the time for ear infections and it can do a number on your digestive system.

Thanks, Liz. And yes, the doc and the nurse were quite clear that they'd pulled out the big antibiotic guns.

They also mentioned taking Augmentin with food. When I asked about possible side effects, the nurse mentioned anorexia.

I LOLed.

Just to be clear, in case this doesn't clear with Augmentin.....it was the big gun of 25 years ago. Now it is just a revolver. So, if you need another antibiotic, they have options.

I've taken Augmentin, highest dose, for 3 weeks. No anorexia. No stomach upset. (That was with a normal stomach and I am sure it was never without food, because there was no such thing as without food back in those days)

You now have a wee little stomach, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Liz, just a P.S. to say what knowledgeable people there are in this group! I think what you described re the allergy that led to irritation to infection is exactly what happened to me.

I also talked to Shel yesterday afternoon, *****confirmed that my optometrist's original Rx treatment (a topical steroid + neomycin) was probably also a culprit in that I was probably allergic to neomycin, saying: "Oh, yeah, that's a thing!"

And last night the ER doc said he sees eyelids like mine all the time in ER because of neomycin allergies. Which is why he said that that Rx "isn't the current protocol" for blepharitis (or whatever this mess I have is called).

Anyway, thanks again for citing your experience with Augmentin.

Good job getting it taken care of! LOL at gorilla-cillin. I'm going to just start adding gorilla to any word when I want to make a point. What's that vegetable? Gorillia-celery!

Hello all,

Quick post before I leave to hike in cold, wet, and with more weight on my back that I am more comfortable with.

I came across a couple of interesting articles yesterday with different slants on topics I follow. One is about going up Mt Rainier and this person spent a fair amount print talking about using yoga-type breathing and mantras, to pass the time and increase comfort. I'm adding that to my training, starting today. For one thing, I can stop complaining about the added weight, cuz, words matter.

And, for all of us, there is this: The person you live with doesn't know you have a food issue. I don't think I have seen much about the dynamics between us and our significant others as we deal with our food stuff. A super quick read, maybe not much there that you don't know, but nice to see it called out.

Big news in my house: a highschool student my daughter worked with at Starbucks was found dead by gunshot in her own home. They are looking for a Highschool student that goes to my daughter's HS: a boy that was reported missing about 10 days ago. The "kids" said that the girl would allow troubled friends to stay at her house for a few days in times of need. The police are publicly saying they think this was an accident but maybe that is to keep that boy from doing who-knows-what. (And, let's remember, no one knows if he is involved for sure.)

My heart breaks for both kids and their families --- and also the whole community of teens that know way too much about gun violence. For these kids, it isn't some random thing that happens far away. This gun death is the second in my daughter's wider circle of friends.

Let there be peace,

Shel
