The first 200 are the hardest!

I'm back from today's hike which humbled me. Per the training plan, I added extra weight to my pack. I have gotten used to extra weight for climbing stairs, but this was a first for a regular hike.

That extra 15 lbs really taxed me. No one muscle group complained, but it was clear that I was more limited by (lack of) strength than breath. Now home, I feel like newbie hiker that just got her butt kicked. I hauled my pack up stairs to the scale and total weight was just under 24 lbs

For Rainier, I need to be able to haul 40lbs of stuff up to Muir basecamp and then 25 lbs up to summit. So, I have work to do! Somehow, knowing that pre-VSG I hauled around an extra 200 lbs, gives me hope. Also, no wonder I could not do even small hikes at that weight.

Ann, I'm still picturing you marching thru your property with cape billowing behind you and packing heat. Makes me smile. By the way, my mom rode her bike by a cougar on a paved trail in Iowa.....quite a shock!

DianeS, I have many memories of I80 and terrible winter roads, too. I hope those affected by fire get a lot of support. Better yet, I hope that somehow we all get the fire science figured out.

Shel, respect for your hike today! Cecily, respect to you for yours, too!

Gee, I may start walking around with a loaded backpack, just to remember what that feels like.

Today I did not wear my long cape outside in what turned out to be 50 mph wind gusts! If I had I'd have been swept up into the sky shrieking like the Wicked Witch of the West!

Even the squirrels around here are probably in Tennessee by now. I have no idea how they can hold on to their trees and nests in that kind of gale, even with their sharp little toenails.

You amaze me, Shel! It's so cool that you're doing this and training the right way. You'll get there!!

Kudos to you and your training! Sounds pretty awesome and HARD! It's one thing to carry 40 pounds nicely spread around your body, but located on your back upsetting balance and spine is a whole different story.
