Friday June whatever

well everyone I am DONE. Just plain worn out. Everyone leaves tomorrow just in time for laundry to be done and another family with 8 children arrive.

It has been a great visit and everyone was so helpful and pleasant but I fine I need "me "time "more and more.

It did not help that the 9 year old got a very large and very deep sliver in their foot and all attempts by their parents to remove it were met with screams. In the end there was a five hour wait in our small hospital's emergency because of course they triage. They had to give the child something to calm the fear and hysteria. I just felt bad for them all.

Intuitive eating! Should have read the post before scarfing down three very large cookies that am baking for the two families return trips.

Sigh. Will I never ever learn?

Such good conversations happening here. I'm so grateful we're willing to spend our mental and emotional calories here.

Carbon, all my sisters are feeling exactly like you right now - they are exhausted and cannot wait for these summer visits from children and grandchildren to be over! My mother, who had seven children, called these events "the storms."

Last night I slept enough and during sensible sleeping hours without taking a Tylenol PM. And again, overnight I'm down another pound! Yesterday's 9 V/F servings came from foods I often eat, including cherry tomatoes, spring lettuces, carrots, beans, corn, plantains, red/yellow peppers, a huge avocado, and a luscious mango.

Yesterday I did not leave the house. I did 45 minutes of yoga in the morning (our class is still on hiatus because of a kaput air conditioner), then some housecleaning and putzed around. In the afternoon I read (BTW, thanks for your Goldfinch comments) and enjoyed a long soak in the tub and home spa ministrations.

At ****tail hour I had a wonderful phone conversation with one of my best friends (he and his partner were on the recent Venice/Athens trip). BTW, as I continue to ponder what I want to be when I grow up, I'm trying to be authentic and transparent with those I love the most. The reward is how good it feels to be recognized and understood. It's that kind of intimacy that I miss most since my husband died--the feeling of being known.

Devon, I joined the Intuitive Eating online community and have done some lurking over there. I don't think I could ever achieve all (or even most) of those ten principles. On a snarky note, it amuses me to see how critical belief communities are of other belief communities. I think there must be something in the human genome that compels us to attack those who follow different paths than our own. For instance, over at the IE board it's apparently inappropriate to weigh yourself regularly. And from what little I have gleaned thus far, they consider WLS to be self-mutilation. Still, there surely is value to be gleaned there, so I'll keep lurking. Some posts have already inspired me to become more mindful (back to mindfulness) and pay closer attention to how I feel when I choose what to eat, while I'm eating, and after I've finished eating.

Today's theme: It's gonna be OK.

Yes! to Human genome directing us to attack people who eat differently!

Patients want to spend whole appt's complaining about the foolishness of others. What a waste of bandwidth. It isn't as if I live in an area where food is scarce and someone else's intake is limiting what is available to others.

(Talking about others definitely limits time available to focus on oneself)

Yesterday, a patient was complaining about a coworker eating avocado toast for 8 hours a day and fasting the rest of the day. Then she paused to give me opportunity to pile on. One can't say "I don't give a rat's azz" in an appt so finally I said "people like that drive up the cost of avocados." I quickly moved convo back to the patient.

And when couples come in together, look out! So, much disapproval between spouses. Ok, that extends to my view of my own DH's diet. But, that is different because I am 1) right and 2) all knowledgeable 3) not to be questioned, ever.

Carbon...sounds like. it is time to compile a list of hotels / B& B's to share with people who want to visit. Eight children in my home would send me over the edge ! I know when my former SIL would visit , I'd build in some quiet time for myself to fortify me for the duration.

DH took the day off to put in a second set of stairs off the back deck. We usually enjoy working on projects together, so it should be fun. We have the last day of our bowling league for this session this afternoon. The organizers are all excited about the rum cake reception afterwards, Wich doesn't interest me in the least. Pie...that is another story !

I did lots of reading on intuitive eating about a year into maintenance. At that time, it seemed like too much carte blanche for me. I'm thinking the take aways will be much different if I revisit now. I formerly viewed food as an activity...a verb. Food and consumption were one in the same. Shifting my mindset to food being fuel was essential for me. I get that it doesn't work for everyone. It was the only way I could shift my focus from food being a source of pleasure to providing my body with what it needed to be healthy and energized. It is a work in progress, but it does help me make better choices when old patterns pop up, like "I'm hot and sweaty and some salty chips and a lemonade would be great." Now, my next thought is fairly consistently "Are you thirsty or hungry? What can I eat that adds some protein first ?" (I still struggle to keep that number high enough.)

I totally know what you mean. Food can be too far the other side for me--where hunger doesn't even factor into it! Food can be entirely about pleasure for me and that's not healthy either. I really like your "next thought" approach of "but am I hungry?" I think that's consistent with what thin people do! Like I'll watch my DSD turn down food that she loves. Or not finish a cake that was made for her. Because she's not hungry and the mood doesn't strike her. Both of those seem to be a prerequisite for her to eat. How novel!
