My emergency device has arrived. It is small....I should hang it off a nose ring so I don't lose it. (Jk, it isn't that small...)

I feel like a little kid looking at that sos button. So tempting...

That is pretty darn small! What is the range? Is it registered with a specific company? How does it signal authorities that you're in distress?

I'm posting info from Garmin website below. It doesn't include price so I will go ahead and say that it is about 350.00 for the unit plus you have to choose a subscription which isn't much per month (in the grand scheme) but would add up if you end up needing it for a whole year. When I originally researched, it tended to show solo women out in nature. It felt Garmin knew me and planted those pics (and I suppose it could, given how information is shared across the web)

I also paid an extra 17-18 dollars for a whole year's worth of insurance up to 100,000 dollars if a rescue ended up costing money (apparently, that's a thing).

What I liked best about GEOS is that it works with local peeps which around here would typically be local rescue plus with text messaging they can tailor the rescue to what you need which is almost never a helicopter!

Some services (that don't require a service subscription) the device just signals a SOS with your coordinates, (so they don't know what is wrong, they just have an SOS signal) then a 100,000 dollar helicopter comes to your location! Very pricey for someone to pay.

Fit Global Connectivity Into Your Palm

  • Small, rugged, lightweight satellite communicator enables two-way text messaging via 100% global Iridium® satellite network (satellite subscription required)
  • Trigger an interactive SOS to the 24/7 search and rescue monitoring center (satellite subscription required)
  • Access downloadable maps, U.S. NOAA charts, color aerial imagery and more by using the free Garmin Earthmate® app and compatible devices
  • Optional inReach weather forecast service provides detailed updates directly to your inReach Mini or paired device; basic and premium weather packages available
  • Send and receive inReach messages through compatible Garmin devices, including connected wearables and handhelds
  • Internal, rechargeable lithium battery provides up to 50 hours of battery life in 10-minute tracking mode

Travel Lighter, Communicate Smarter

It is GPS, I believe it can work world-wide (when I activated I entered in my local information. Perhaps would need to adjust something if going far away.).

From REI website:

Measuring just under 4? tall by 2? wide and weighing a mere 3.5 oz, inReach Mini is fit for exterior pack pockets or accessory loops. It connects for messaging via the 100% global Iridium satellite network. You don?t have to worry about being within range of a cell tower or encountering spotty coverage.

Who will answer your SOS? GEOS will.

GEOS is the world leader in emergency response solutions and monitoring. They?ve supported rescues in more than 140 countries, saving many lives in the process. And they?re standing by 24/7 to respond to your SOS, track your device and notify the proper contacts and emergency responders in your area. Once you?ve triggered a distress signal, you can expect a delivery confirmation that help is on the way and be continually updated on the status of your response team.

How do you not accidentally press that big button in your bag?

I feel like I could push that button with my mom stink-eye.

I haven't read the directions, yet, but I believe the sos button has a cap on it that must be flipped open so it can't be accidentally engaged.

So you can't push the button accidentally like butt dialing a phone? And hey, do they allow you to do a test run it to make sure it works? ds
