I had such a great time last night! A friend invited me to an Italian themed dinner at a local brew pub. The food was paired with beer (my friend and I took wine) that was scrumptious! BB Bonnie, you would have so approved of the dishes served: a little spoonful of tomato, mozzarella, basil, etc., risotto with duck breast, a parmesan pasta (of which I ate very little), a luscious dessert (cornmeal scone, strawberries, whipped cream and other things that made it so much better than that sounds like), and an excellent cheese plate. The maintenance good news is that portion sizes were small, and I didn't overeat.

But the best part was that all the 30-40 other guests (all in their 30s, 40s and 50s) were so much fun. The evening turned into one of sharing worldwide travel stories, and I was shocked (SHOCKED!) to learn how well traveled almost everyone in the room was. For instance, the young mother sitting across from me has been to Venice four times. That certainly put me in my place, which is a good thing, because I certainly need to be put in my place. I'm reveling in the realization that this little burg has some interesting people I've never met before. That's what can happen when you live out in the boondocks and go to town only to exercise with other old people or to pass through town on your way to the airport. ;)

And in other news, a huge rainstorm last night blew the umbrella off the deck and (I think?) destroyed it. I'll deal with that later.

Today's another busy day -- pool, lots of errands, a facial, and book club meeting tonight. Actual packing has still not begun.

Today's theme: Get out more!

Maybe you will find a novel in the people of West Plains.

Good job on enjoying fun, people and small portions!

Sorry about the wind--we tried to keep that rain around here last night, but the cloud gods said they, "were sorry, but could not linger, and had to get along to Ann's house--appointment with an umbrella." DS's garden had a good drink and will live another day or so.

Good morning,

Welcome to my procrasti-posting.

My parents went home to Iowa yesterday. It was nice to have them out there. Their bodies are beginning to betray them. They are still able to get in their 10,000 steps but the steps are clearly slower and it looks like they are missing some joint grease.

I'll make sure that at least my daughter and I get out to Iowa sometime this summer. There won't always be the opportunity to visit, esp for us to all go do things together. (Someday, that trip is going to be an anxious emergency.)

Also, no need to bore you with details, but my sister is a mystery to me these days/years. I was surprised to learn that she rarely communicates with my parents. She was genuinely lovely to us all during the visit. (We are Iowans, we do nice) But, I couldn't help but feel like it was check-box nice, an extra burden on her (obsessive?) long list of to-dos.

DianeO, thanks for those statistics! I'm glad that someone is collecting information. How valuable!

My challenge for the summer is how to hike strenuously and then not overeat for days. I'm gaining weight. It is not purely head hunger. It is a shifty beast. I need to figure out what my body really needs because it clearly isn't that many extra calories. I might need to try to get an extra 30-60 minutes of sleep per day, plus extra hydration? I will have to experiment and see.

I'm working remotely from home this morning. I bet you can't tell that since I have posted a million times. BB, I would advise your DH to work hard at home when he is officially working.(Definitely no posting on OH.) Then drop it when he is done for the day. I like your idea of going off to the gym to provide a clear break.

Have a great day. Personally, I need to find my work, rather than recess.

Shel

Shel, I have a sister (middle) who has been a recluse for years and years. So strange. No one is sure, exactly what the deal is, other than she feels we (family) and the world in general has screwed her and so "F-them all", and she has totally disengaged. Any attempt to reconnect has resulted in ever increasingly rude and hurtful retort, and for several years- silence. I have no suggestions. It is so sad.

My own large Southern family, including 5 sisters and 7 nieces, is composed of central casting characters in the vein of Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Connor, Tennessee Williams, Harper Lee, William Faulkner, and Honey Boo Boo. They are drama queens of the firs****er -- diagnosed, misdiagnosed and undiagnosed, over-medicated or under-medicated, both funny and infuriating, who manage to be personally insulted by every comment made within earshot.

I feel your pain.

Love it! My favorite Designing Women scene is Julia Sugarbaker talking about nutty family members...

Julia: "I'm saying this is the South, and we're proud of our crazy people. We don't hide them up in the attic. We bring 'em right down to the living room and show 'em off. See, Phyllis, no one in the South ever asks IF you have crazy people in your family. They just ask what side they're on."
Phyllis: Oh? And which side are yours on Mrs. Sugarbaker?
Julia: Both.
