Satiety - what is your feeling of "full" after VSG?
on 2/22/18 10:23 pm
One thing worth noting, I haven't had the full feeling when eating crap. I can pretty much eat endless carbs and sweets without feeling it. But protein and veggies will bring it on. And I'm not one who feels sick or yucky from eating processed or sugary stuff. It would be helpful if I did, but I don't.
I feel a mildly "full" pressure in my upper stomach when I've eaten just enough. That can quickly become an overfull feeling pushing up into my esophagus if I over eat. Sometimes that overeating feeling doesn't come on until a little later and is accompanied by burping (often happens when I go out to eat) and if I have really over done it, slimies. Yuck. The odd (maybe) thing about it is that the overfull feeling doesn't last long. I could probably eat again in an hour if I wanted to. Pre-VSG, if we had a big meal (out to eat) I could easily not eat the rest of the day. Not so now, but of course I can't eat nearly the amount at a "big" meal.
What is my full like?
Pre WLS I was never so much a 3 plateful type of a guy but I would eat all day. I stayed topped off. I very rarely would make it 5 hours between meals. Since 2005 eating has an anxiety calming element to it. Sometimes I would work 15 min and be emotionally famished. I would stop everything to come back in to top off and recharge emotional energy. The full feeling was emotionally comforting, often uncomfortable physically. When I would drink water I would guzzle a quart easily. When I would hit full on water there was always a satisfactory Now I am rehydrated feeling. Refreshed. I got enough. I can go back to what I am doing.
Post WLS my full happens 2 bites before I stop. If I would recognize it and stop it then I would be fine. I would have a feeling of contentment and calm and completion. Nothing uncomfortable. I rarely stop in time though. With nuts and yogurt I always weigh and measure. I have a sense of completion, satisfaction, enough and the perfect fullness. Drinking plain water I get a full, too full feeling with a quarter cup. I can not guzzle. Most of my water has lemon concentrate and stevia. I can drink about 1 and a half cups with that mix.
I really think Ann nailed the reason for satiety. Speed. I am a super fast eater. I am in a race to see if I can beat my all time best time, I guess. I used to think it was because in grade school we had 30 min to get it, consume it and return to class. But my whole family eats fast. I was programmed to rush. When working construction we had 30 min lunch breaks. When I was self employed I would either eat while driving or graze while working. DW is a slow eater. Rarely over full. She describes her full much like Ann.

I am a fast eater too and have noticed that when I slow down the full feeling hits a bit sooner. I used to have 15 minutes to eat in high school! Regardless, I guess we should figure out how to slow down.
Interesting observation: My husband seems to shovel in food non-stop lately (he used to eat much slower than me). Like literally shovel. Is he patterning after me now, is it because he doesn't talk a lot during a meal anymore, or is it because as his dementia progresses he reverts back to eating more primitively? Hmmm....

FWIW (and maybe very little,) my MIL never lost her dainty eating style with memory loss.

I forgot to say that when I over eat or too fast I feel awful. Most of the times I can get up and walk around and it goes away. Sometimes it lasts for hours. I ate 3 or 4 chicken chunks from Sonic the other day at 1pm. Ate too fast and was nauseous the rest of the day. Had the slime ees. I almost threw up and I would have felt better if I could have.
We have a dog that is very food oriented. Will do anything for a crumb. I can toss a crumb and I swear it never hits his lips. No chewing nothing but gone. When I eat too fast I feel like it does not even touch my taste buds. Just gone.
