When my Dad didn't call me yesterday afternoon or last night or early this morning my brain went to that ugly place it goes to where I catastrophize the situation and imagine worst case scenarios are coming true. I had nightmares that it was bad. So I texted him this morning and said I was anxious to hear how his appts went when he wanted to talk. He called and said they went great. Jerk. Why didn't he just text me on the way to the airport yesterday with a thumbs up and an "I'll call you later"?? Men.

They saw one spot in his bladder that could be a cancerous lesion but could also be a scar from a prior biopsy, so they suggested biopsying that (why they aren't set up to biopsy right then I don't know, but they can't). His oncologist didn't see anything on his scans and said who knows, he just may end up being one of the 10% that actually survive this for 5 years. I kept waiting for there to be something bad because my Dad didn't seem excited by this news. It must just be emotionally draining to go through something like that. I'm cautiously optimistic for once as this is the first good check he's ever had since this started more than 2 years ago and so very grateful for at least 3 more months of not worrying.

Today I'm going to lunch and whale watching on the spur of the moment with my girlfriends. I'll send pictures!

Greetings TGIFers

Just a drive by. Gallery duty in a few. 147 today. I am sliding and need to get a handle on it. No major pig outs - just nibbles of nuts and the &*(%%$%& mexican candy which isn't even that good and was given to me by a sleever. I even took a walk in the bird sanctuary - marsh which is across the street from our studio. Shel, I will take you there if you like. Probably not on the lonely planet video. As Dave Says, more later. Diane S

Aaahhh ... wine, scotch, and alcohol in general ... big subject!

My dad was an alcoholic, and four of his nine siblings (three brothers and a sister) were also alcoholics. One of my two brothers is an alcoholic, as are two brothers-in-law and several nephews.

Therefore, I've always kept a serious eye on my alcohol intake. It won't shock any of you who know what an MFP freak I am that I measure my daily wine intake (5 ounces) to ensure I'm in compliance with current medical advice about moderate alcohol use for women:

Moderate alcohol use for healthy adults means up to one drink a day [5 ounces of wine] for women of all ages and men older than age 65, and up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger.

Heavy drinking is defined as more than three drinks on any day or more than seven drinks a week for women and for men older than age 65, and more than four drinks on any day or more than 14 drinks a week for men age 65 and younger.

Binge drinking is defined as four or more drinks within two hours for women and five or more drinks within two hours for men.

There's more medical advice about alcohol intake at many sites, including this one: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-h ealthy-eating/in-depth/alcohol/art-20044551

My husband didn't drink, which made it easy to keep my alcohol intake at the moderate level. I do occasionally drink more than one glass of wine daily, e.g., at a family wedding last fall (and didn't drink any alcohol for several nights afterward) or on vacation when I may (or may not) have a glass of wine with lunch as well as dinner.

By limiting my alcohol for so long I've learned to (1) hydrate well before pouring a glass of wine so I'm not drinking alcohol out of thirst and (2) sip my wine very slowly -- my 5-ounce pour takes about an hour to consume and is as much ritual for me as anything else.

Could I drink more than one glass of wine? Hell, yes! Would I like to? Sometimes.

Could alcohol become a big problem for me? Of course, it could -- I'm a new widow, in pain, and lonely. When I'm not grieving my husband's absence, I'm in danger of boring myself to death. Plus, I've got a million feelz right now I'd like to numb.

And then there's celebratory drinking with good friends and random party people, which I enjoy a helluva lot more than using alcohol to numb my pain. What a broadly useful drug alcohol turns out to be, eh? BTW, I've never done cocaine, but I can imagine its charms as well.

Not quite sure what my point has turned into, but mainly I'm saying that thus far in my life I've managed to avoid alcohol's potential boo-boos, some of which are pretty unpleasant.

And if you already don't know this, alcohol usage is not a very safe topic to raise out there on other OHM forums.

I know that even mentioning wine drinking can bring out the OH "police" on the forums. I too am very conscious of alcohol consumption due to the alcoholism in the family, hence my concern about SIL and my thoughts about caution with regard to myself. I feel blessed to be able to mention it with you guys without getting attacked.

Greetings Again

Back from my gallery duty and busy gluing little figures on to wine stoppers. I have another piece to repair that a customer broke so I have sticky fingers today.

Well I am almost ready to start food tracking again. I am really feeling like a porker. At least there is shrimp for dinner tonight. I think I will grill mine with sweet peppers. DH always wants it shrimp ****tail which is pathetically easy.

Yeah, good discussion on wine. I drink more than I should but have cut back. Its become my "treat" rather than sugar stuff. Still its not healthy to overindulge even if red wine is considered health food.

I had DH get me some almonds at costco. I had been diving into his macadamia nuts and THAT HAS GOT TO STOP.

I wish I could pay someone to exercise for me. In return, I would eat their food for them. Fair deal?

Well now I have to go find some bosc pears. My favorite and they seem to keep better. DH hates them. Of course pears, apples (and salads) are just a dais for blue cheese. Hmm, I seem to be pretty food obsessed today. I guess I will start some laundry.

Enjoy the charity lunch Ann. Glad you are out and about. And Cecily I am glad about your dad. Peace and Joy all. Diane S
