Just finished reading yesterday's posts, and it seems Christmas Day was good in different ways for us. Some of your foods and recipes sounded so delicious.
Paula, I'm glad your trip to West Virginia was fast and safe; I hope y'all enjoy your time down there. The road trip together sounds like it will become a treasured memory for everyone in the car. Devon, I would read anything you posted anywhere, and I look forward to reading your blog. Liz, I don't think I could play backgammon very well these days; I was never much good at it anyway, but you never know what a person's brain will love until he tries it. David and Shel, your African stories fascinate me. Shel, the monkey doctoring your boo-boos sorta freaks me out, but it's sweet, too. And David, I'm so sorry to hear all these years later that you and your African grey had to part. Diane O, love all your life stories, including dear puppy (DP?). Diane S, throwing things away is such good therapy for me, so I admire your plans to de-clutter. Cecily, I am happy (and a little bit jealous) for your hiking opportunities; I'm also happy your dad is doing so much better physically and enjoying his new training regimen.
My current enthusiasm for recipes and good foods is due to having cooked such a great meal last night for hubby, his daughter and me -- something I don't often do mid-week when it's just hubby and me at table, since his appetite wanes hour to hour. But he loved last night's dinner -- oven-grilled salmon steaks, small potatoes in herbs, and a romaine/pears/toasted pecans/blue cheese/raspberry vinaigrette salad. Wow, was it a great combination! And not a lot of trouble to prepare either.
Yesterday's lunch was also quite good and (for me) unusual--a veggie cheeseburger. Hubby's daughter is a vegetarian, so yesterday morning we went shopping and laid in her kinds of foods. It was so interesting to go to the grocery store with someone who eats quite differently -- she bought such different foods. The experience inspired me to get out of my rut of same-things-every-day-and-week menus. There are many interesting foods out there!
Oddly, I wound up with eating only 5 full servings of V/Fs that came from tomatoes, spring lettuces, red onion, romaine lettuce, half a pear, small potatoes, and black grapes. Calories were higher than I'd planned, but apparently my body liked everything I gave it. Some bathroom time didn't hurt either. ;)
Hubby's second chemo treatment is this morning; if his past reactions to chemo are a good predictor, he'll feel good this afternoon and tomorrow, but pretty yucky this weekend. I go back to the pool this morning (Yea!) and will talk to our financial planner later this morning re our 2018 investments.
Today's Theme: Gratitude -- I am so very grateful for my husband, health and home.

Gratitude is a good theme. I need to remember what I am grateful for more often.
Thank you for the suggestions on games. I used to like Yahtzee when young but never played dominoes or heard of "Kings in the Corner". We will have to give a variety of games a try and see what he enjoys. Last night we were at a friends and their daughter brought out an interactive group game called Werewolf. It confused DH, but in all honesty it confused quite a few of us. We dropped out and went home as it was late at that point anyway.
Weight 117.8, calories 2073. I am kicking myself this morning because I did great all day, even during the main meal at our friends, but then ate a whole bunch of desserts because they were left out and were accessible. Plus 2 Rumchata liqueurs. So my weight is up 1.2 pounds which I fully deserve. This morning I have my annual physical with my PCP. Oh well.
I'm glad you all had good Christmases. Paula, enjoy your time with Ben and your family in WV. Ann, I hope DH is not too miserable when the chemo kicks in. It sounds like he is struggling with it so I'm glad he enjoyed your salmon meal (which does sound wonderful).
DSD went home yesterday so it is quieter here today. But we are going out to dinner again tonight with friends and family is coming for the weekend.
Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Ann-Hoping DH's chemo goes well and maybe the effects aren't so bad this weekend. Gratitude needs to be my theme for the YEAR. It's so easy to complain. And it feels good in the moment. But my complaints are so laughable. Definitely #firstworldprobs. For example: It's bitterly cold here and my empty light came on and so I had to pump gas myself. I started to complain in my head about this. But then I remembered DH telling me at a seminar they had told him some staggering number of people cannot fill their tanks. I mean I knew not everyone could, but this was an overwhelming majority. So now every time I go to fill my tank I try to remember how thankful I am that I CAN.
Liz-mmm rumchata. Hubby says "tastes like Christmas." I've missed my ****tails. Just something so fun and adult, especially this time of year.
Weight: 181.2 or something. Eek. Oh well.
I was hoping to begin setting up the nursery this long weekend but they had to drill several holes to put in insulation. And so...gratitude that we have identified the problem (or at least part of it, may still need a return for A/C) and that we could afford to fix it and that they showed up and did their job!
I'm definitely craving some nesting. I want to clean out my closets and all my pantries. It's like on steroids this year. It's something I love to do for the new year anyway, but the realization of baby being here in potentially 10 weeks really makes me want to clean and organize!!
Oh, also I got an instant pot. Any basic tips? Websites? I am really looking forward to using this for New baby meal prep and healthy meals in the future. I'm a little apprehensive that it's going to be a big learning curve and take up so much space.
Well..after a blissful week of sleeping through the night, Atlas was up at 1:30 AM. I left the lights off and spoke to him in hushed, neutral tones, planning on returning him to his crate. He stood at the kitchen counter where I prepare his food, and cried mournfully. I KNOW he is going through a growth spurt, so even though I knew I was reinforcing a behavior I don't want him to continue, I gave him enough kibble to take the edge off, hoping to potty him again and put him back down. Not so much. I kept him in the downstairs family room, away from Sadie and the cats, with the lights down low, where we both napped on and off until Chuck's and my alarm went off at 5 AM. Chuck has a busy day at work, and I wanted him to get some sleep. So, I was half a pot into the coffee before I could get to the scale, and elected to skip the weigh in today.
I mentioned that we gave each other an Ab Doer 360, and the Wii Fit Sport, Sport Resort, and the Fit board and Wii Fit. The board has a scale that talks to you and offers comments when you weigh in. When I previously had a Wii, I was morbidly obese and was never eager to hear the feedback. I'm looking forward to trying it out at a healthy weight.
Ann... I love your themes for the day. I have decided to edit and combine your Just F-ing Do It and BB's Get S_it Done, to Just F-ing Get S_it Done (JFGSD), to get me motivating to 2018. As much as we loved the tree, we need our third gate/barrier fence which was at its base for the bottom of the full flight stairs from the family room to the upstairs. The other two gates are fully utilized, and NOBODY (except someone with thirteen puppies) needs FOUR gates. Taking the tree down and packing up the stockings, greens, etc. from above the fireplace so I can DUST ! Fortunately, the numerous winter themed decorations can stay up.
Ann, positive thoughts for DH's treatment. Paula, thinking of you with Ben's family. BB..sorry there was some family drama. There will be a new focal point next year ! It is encouraging to hear Devon, Ann, BB and Liz's positive experiences with steps. Dave and Shel - an African connection... who knew ? When we all have the opportunity to meet and sit around and talk... we'll eagerly be up for days !! Cecily..our -15 below ZERO wind chill here makes me so jealous of your weather and walking opportunities !! Diane...can't wait to hear how your color and cut turn out !!
So, JFGSD

Weight 163.4 wow that went fast. Calories, no idea, that has to stop!
It's my birthday today! 46. Yikes. When did that happen? Nothing exciting planned for today. A therapy appt and eyebrow waxing. And maybe meeting up with a friend this afternoon.
Yesterday was chock full of bad choices. I really grazed on not healthy stuff just because it was there. I need to get back on track. It feels better.
I hope everybody has a great day!
Hey, in my first drive by I missed that it was your birthday! Happy Birthday! You are so hip, therapy appt AND eyebrows waxing :) Hope you having a great day!
