Halloween! Tuesday October 31
Weight possibly 119!? Calories 881. The weight is a ? because my scale is acting screwy. It is a balance beam scale so should be very accurate, but apparently DH did something to it yesterday. It was completely unbalanced this morning (and the weights weren't where I left them yesterday). It took me a long time to get it to where I think it is re-balanced and now it says I gained 2.5 pounds between yesterday and today. The top is more moveable than usual so I don't know whether to trust it or not. Arghhh!
Crappy start to the morning with DH having a bathroom accident, then the weight thing, then the dog got into a scuffle with some animal in the yard. And now I need to start my morning work with barely a cup of coffee in!
Anyway, Happy Halloween!

Arrrrgh! Liz, that's NOT the way to start your day. Sending sincere sympathies! BTW, when I travel and fly, regardless of how much I've eaten on the trip, my weight is always, always up. I've lost as much as 5 pounds in the 2 days following a short air trip.
Yesterday's 6 V/F servings came from a banana, black beans, tomatoes, chiles, broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, and red grapes.
My weight's back down. And I have a new theory about what's going on. The other big change I made two months ago (after my third surgiversary meeting with my bariatric surgeon's team), in addition to eating more V/Fs, was that I started taking daily iron oral supplementation, on the advice of my surgeon's bariatric team. FYI, my iron had tested "normal" on the annual blood panel, but just barely so and was right on the border of "low."
So last weekend I used my Google-Fu and found a summary of a small study done in a Turkish hospital (published in 2014) reporting that women treated for iron deficiency anemia with oral iron supplementation for 4-6 months saw their "Waist circumference, body weight and BMI significantly reduced ... after treatment compared to pre-treatment period." The study was designed and conducted after the hospital's earlier patients who'd been treated for iron anemia complained that after their treatment was concluded (and apparently when they were no longer taking iron supplementation) they had gained weight. Hmmmm.
Here's the study summary. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24770833 Unfortunately, I don't have log-on rights to see any actual data collected (extent of weight loss, etc.).
And back in the real world, there's not much new here. It's definitely chilly chili season. We can still have our ****tails (wine for me, Gatorade for hubby) on the screen porch if we wear some fleece. The pool is filling up at aquarobics class, as folks reconsider their cold-weather exercise options.
Have a happy or horrifying Halloween (whichever one you enjoy the most). :)

Happy Halloween!
My fellow pharmacist is out of office for the next 3 weeks. Blech. I miss her already.
Liz! Surely the day can only get better!
I had 3 pieces of candy yesterday and then a couple of cookies because I had 3 pieces of candy. I think I will be ok today. DD has a couple of friends coming over tonight. DH decorated the house for Halloween and will man the front door. I'll make chili and will be happy enough with that.
It is official, I am an old codger. One the friends coming over tonight uses he/him or they/them for pronouns. I have known this person for years and this is new for me. I have zero issue with the concept and want to be respectful. But will my voice comply when the time comes? DD says that he/they will just be really happy that I am trying even if I mess up.
Hug your skinny bones!

Google "what's with pronouns these days" or something like that. She is gender flexible in some way. Born female but doesn't identify as female. So, don't call her a her per request.
I can't remember what I wrote in my post but per my DD, "what's your preferred pronoun" is a common question amongst teens. It has also been a topic at leadership meetings at work as part of making patients feel comfortable with their care.

The pronoun thing......I assume Shel's DD's friend is a biological female but identifies as a male or non bianary (neither male or female - a third gender if you would) or gender fluid (no fixed gender). I've had quite the education over the years living with 2 in the LGBTQ community. Here is one resource defining different terms in the LGBTQ community http://itspronouncedmetrosexual.com/2013/01/a-comprehensive- list-of-lgbtq-term-definitions/#sthash.f5m2ycQG.dpbs
Paula
yes, those were the terms I was looking for.... non-binary and gender fluid. Still learning the vocabulary

Totally off topic question (since I really have nothing to add to weight loss or maintenance game right now :( )
What do you think about baby showers? More specifically, who should host, when, what do you think about registries?
A couple of things: I've hosted many baby showers and wedding showers. But I love doing it. It's fun for me. When it came time for me to have a wedding shower, I got the sense that my friends were waiting (hoping?) that someone else would step up and offer first. It has nothing to do with wanting gifts or anything like that, but it honestly hurt my feelings that not only do I happily attend these affairs, but I host them, and no one seemed excited to return the favor.
This time, I'm getting asked a lot of questions suddenly about my shower. Am I having it, when is it? Which I find very odd because...it is NOT ACCEPTABLE for me to throw my own shower!! Now maybe they are fishing, wanting to collaborate but not wanting to step on toes. I've also been asked if my mom/sisters are hosting. I understand etiquette rules are becoming more lax, but I'm uncomfortable with even that. It gives off the appearance of "self-serving gift grab." I did have one friend offer to "help host" at my house!! While I really appreciate the offer, once again that does not seem appropriate. Hey, I love throwing parties. But I'm not so keen on the idea of throwing my own. The last baby shower I went to was at the mom-to-be's house. While it does have the advantage of not having to transport any gifts received, it also comes with lots of stress. Because no matter how much the hosts host, I'm the one who needs to get the house cleaned and ready, I'm the one who knows where the extra paper towels are, move chairs around, etc....and at 8-9 months pregnant that doesn't sound very exciting.
Does this make any sense? Is that really old-fashioned thinking? I just want people to celebrate our happy news and I don't want anyone to think we only want gifts! I've heard the best time to have a shower is 4-8 weeks before due date because baby can come early and you may need to complete buying for baby. So we're looking at mid-January to mid-February. While that sounds miles away right now, I think everyone is going to get extremely busy with the holidays for the next 2 months, and then BAM it's time to start thinking about sending invitations.
