Weight 114.5, calories 728. We did a lot of traveling around yesterday. Today will be a house cleaning day (at least in the am), as we have a friend from Rochester NY coming for the weekend. He was a college roommate of DH. DH saw him perhaps 5-8 years ago when they met at the Baseball Hall of Fame. It has been 10-11 since I have. DH has always been great at keeping in touch with all his old friends. It should be fun as Michael is a really funny guy.

I am not as good as DH about keeping in touch, but do have a get together with some neighborhood friends in a couple of weeks and a bunch of high school friends in September. I didn't have college friends as I went to college and graduate school at night. But I have a lot of work friends from the days when there was a lot of camaraderie in the office and have recently reconnected with a guy I worked with perhaps 30 years ago who now owns a music mixing studio. I don't know why there are fewer friendships formed in the office now: Perhaps more pressure, working through lunch, remote workers, so many conversations done electronically?

I had the RMR and Dexa scan yesterday. The RMR test was enlightening, yet confirmed what I thought was the case. My calories should be between 1000-1300 to maintain. I've felt that 1200-1300 on average was keeping me in maintenace. He said that was a bit lower than the average at my height, weight and age. So now we know part of the reason I was obese! My Dexa scan said that I have about 24% body fat which is at the high end of lean for a woman (so I shouldn't lose any more weight, which I knew anyway). I'm trying to understand the bone density information, but will be providing that to my doctor.

Interesting: with clothes and some water on board (no food due to fasting), I was 116.2 on the electronic scale, but 117.2 on the Dexa machine. This was in a medical office and there was a one pound differential! No wonder the slight OCD in me is uncomfortable with different scales. I'll just continue to rely on my own as reference.

Have an enjoyable Friday!

207.2 Yesterday was bad. My brothers had an argument. Since my parents died, everyone just keeps drifting. How did I deal? A cheese dog from a Parkway rest stop? I needed to use the restroom and was going to get a grilled chicken sandwich and not eat the bun. However, they no longer sell my favorite that I was looking for, and I drove off the rails. Not my proudest moment. It was so salty and gross that I considered throwing it out the window. Hindsight shows that is what I should have done, but I was truly hungry as it was way past feeding time. I wrapped 2 cookies to bring home from my son from a work meeting and ate those before the hot dog. Stupid, it did not take the edge off, but started the cravings as I should have and probably did realize. At least I stopped the madness and declined the ton of Chinese food offered to me at my brother's house while picking up my son. I ate nothing and drank a ton of water. My SIL mentioned that her diet is off the rails during the move. I said nothing because I was soaked in shame. My daughter told my son that I only call her when I need something, because I asked her to drive my son to my brother's house. (smh)

No tomatoes in 3 days! The greens will ripen soon. In the meantime, I am picking peppers which are not nearly as good as the tomatoes.

Joey, not being a mother I admit I don't share the motherhood trait, i.e., unwavering love for one's child. But aren't there limits for how much self-delusional abuse your daughter should be allowed to dish out to the only person in her life who is supporting her?

You are an amazing, generous mother. There is no question of that in anyone's mind. Except your daughter's. You don't deserve that at all. No parent does. IMHO, your daughter needs to get a clue.

Climbing down off my WTF?! box now.

Greetings Good People

Up a half to 137. Not good. We had BLT's last night without any bread. Turkey bacon. I did drink a fair amount of wine. We wanted to take the old dog in for exam but they had no appointments. We decided to reduce her meds since they are pain meds and can cause wobbly movement. We think she is a little perkier today - following people into the kitchen whenever they go in. So maybe she was over medicated. Still she won't get better but maybe be stable.

Yes Liz, my rmr was something like 936 calories so I need to stay under 1400 to maintain. No wonder I got so fat.

Good that DH keeps up with old friends. I still have some from high school and law school and they mean a lot.

Joey sorry you had some tense moments but a hot dog and two cookies will do no irreparable harm. Every day is a new one and we hit the restart button.

Banking stuff was inconclusive yesterday but I found some more paper work at home that should clear it up.

Well more BLT's tonight but HORRORS we are out of mayo. No can do without mayo.

Tesla needs shot updates. Guess thats today's mission plus more banking. But first, more coffee..... Diane S

Happy Friday!

Down below, I pasted an article from NYT's about walnuts and WL. Short enough for pasting, I think.

Busy day as I prepare for an great weekend. Must leave house super early tomorrow for a hike farther north and deeper into mountains that usual. Then to meet up with Ann on Sunday in BC!

Have a great day! Shel (PS, I wish work didn't get in the way of fun although generally I like my job.)

A handful of walnuts may be an effective weight loss tool.

Walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and other substances and, in moderation, have been linked to reduced risk of obesity and diabetes. They may also efficiently reduce appetite.

Researchers now may have found out why. They had nine hospitalized obese patients drink, on five consecutive days, either a smoothie containing 48 grams of walnuts (1.7 ounces, or about 14 walnut halves and 315 calories) or a placebo smoothie identical in taste and calorie content. Then, after a month on their regular diet, the patients returned for a second five-day trial, with placebo drinkers on the first trial receiving a walnut smoothie, and vice versa.

The participants underwent M.R.I. brain exams while looking at pictures of high-fat food (cake, for example), low-fat food (vegetables) or neutral pictures of rocks and trees.

6Comments

The study, published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, found that when people looked at pictures of high-fat food, activation in the insula, a part of the brain involved in appetite and impulse control, increased among those who drank the walnut smoothie, but not among placebo drinkers. The study was funded in part by the California Walnut Commission.

?Walnuts can alter the way our brains view food and impact our appetites,? said the lead author, Olivia M. Farr, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. ?Our results confirm the current recommendations to include walnuts as part of a healthy diet.?

Interesting! Almonds are my favorite - I tend to find walnuts a little bitter?

Once I got some really fresh walnuts from someone who had a tree. I can't tell you how much better they were than the ones from the store. So fresh. Wish I could get more. I get them if I see them at a little roadside stand. dc

Maybe it applies to all nuts. The walnut commission has every reason to call out omegas since they are the only nut with omegas. But, they don't know that omegas are the reason for benefit.
