Do you have an FML (family medical leave) in place? One of the women who works for me has had one for years. It gives her the right to take unplanned time off with no notice and either use vacation time or take it unpaid. As a manager I cannot consider any of those occurrences for disciplinary action. I can hold her to the same work objectives as others in her role which means she either has to work extra time (she is on salary) or do the work in the time she has available. As an example of how this works, she frequently doesn't start wor****il late morning. I ask that she txt me her expected starting time by 9 am so I know when she will be available (for meetings etc). If she falls behind she works later in the day or on the weekend to catch up.
