I swear by eating extra protein for losing weight too!  Does Dr C have anything to say about that?

Yep, Dr C told me to up my protein when my weight loss was slow. It worked.  He now recommends 90 g per day for women - he used to say 70.  He thinks most people don't get enough. He gave a scientific explanation for it once but I can't remember it.  diane s

Yes, he does! Protein makes the body work harder, thus burns more calories. It also does not readily covert to glucose making the body use it's it's glucose stores and then when those are depleted the body converts fat stores into glucose. So the more we stick to protein and fat the more the body has to work at making its own glucose for energy, which means it's working harder and burning more calories.

A good example he used once in group a simple breakfast comparison:

You have a choice of 1 extra large egg with 1/2 tsp butter (roughly 100 calories) or 1/2 english muffin with 1/2 tsp butter (roughly 100 calories). Same calories, but very different body reactions.

Eat the egg and the body has to break down the proteins, blood glucose stays steady, and very little insulin is released in the bloodstream. The body will start turning to its stores for glucose energy because we haven't supplied it with easily accessible energy. The protein is still energy food, but not nearly as easy for the body to access as quick energy, but it will still use the protein for building cells, etc....

Eat the english muffin and the body readily converts the carbs in the muffin to glucose to use for energy. Glucose blood levels rise. Insulin is released to break down the glucose for energy because it's easy access. Now the body doesn't have to go to its own stores for energy and fat burning is not triggered by the english muffin meal. Actually, studies have shown that insulin release actually promotes fat storage.

So, yes, it's still calories in, calories out, but not all calories react the same way in the body.

Hey!

Happy April Fool's Day. No Fool from me today. Shucks.... just don't have a good one.

Had a very off day yesterday. Exhaustion caught up with me, I'm sure, plus Ron has caught a cold that seems to be similar to mine in virulence, but with slightly different symptoms, so comfort food made its way into the house - never good for me. He wanted Hot and Sour soup, which is not bad at all, but I ate some other Chinese food, high in salt no doubt. I also got him his Oreos - which is a favorite when he's sick. I ate one and it was like all Hell broke lose. I could have Fu*&@%g eaten an entire damn row of those puppies. Lord, the sweet tooth was unleashed. I ended up grazing A LOT last night. Also, way shy on water yesterday. Not a day to write home about, but they happen. Not a big deal. Just need to move on.

So, gee, go figure, I was up 1.6 today.

As is usual after a day like yesterday, I have absolutely no appetite. I'm going with it, too. I have yet to eat and it's almost 1:30. I will get on it and put something in the tank as I have a work out in 3 hours.

Pups are all doing well. Will post a favorite pic from yesterday in a bit.

EDIT: PIC

Lovely photo.

But lets not talk about eating a row of puppies with a row of puppies pictured :)

Insanely jealous of your brood.
