Yup I've seen a lot of people get ripped apart about consuming alcohol. This is where the RNY'ers who visit our board go nutso. Not that I'm advocating for drinking, but I do see some slight differences between how VSG'ers vs RNY'ers actually metabolize alcohol.

But with that said, I think the biggest issue with early consumption is that we have not yet learned new coping mechanisms, so it does indeed require treading carefully at 3 months post op. Also, the liquid calories/carbs thing, of course, which is why to this day when I indulge I always stick to a small serving of wine.

this stuff drives me nuts. My older brother had this surgery and his surgeon was excellent but the dietician was terrible.  I gave him the Cirangle plan and he did really well on it.  the dietician was telling him to eat cream of wheat and such junk.   Not good.  diane s

Doesn't really bother me.  4 days out I think the only thing you need to be concerned about is eating things soft enough.  Dr's instructions will vary.  Because no one doctor does things the exact same way on different bodies, I only concerned myself with my Dr.'s instructions.  My surgeon has always been pretty liberal about food intake.  His theory was that if you could eat low/no carbs after surgery, then you had better save yourself the money and skip the surgery altogether by doing that now.  Aka the surgery didn't change our brains, only our stomachs.  And while we should strive to eat healthy, it is unrealistic to expect us from eating like we have been to strictly following a keto diet.  And that if we could do that, then that would lead us to weightloss without surgery.

 

I also found the toughest part of my entire journey was the first week, and really the first 6 weeks.  I had terrible hunger mixed with acid reflux that felt like hunger.  I had heard so many people who came off the operating table and never had a touch of hunger that I was so shocked when I did.  A lot of foods did not do well for me early after.  I just couldn't keep them down!  So I have to admit I had more than my fair share of 100 calorie packs of wheat thins (eaten throughout the day) just to settle my stomach.  Finally, my granddad, with whom I was extremely close, died unexpectedly just 4 days after surgery.  In fact, I checked myself out of the hospital early and my mom drove me 4 hrs. back home and straight to the ER to be with him.  Obviously my situation is a little dramatic, but you never know.  I tried my best to be careful with what I put into my new sleeve.  But people seem to deal with grief by eating or not eating.  For me, it's the former.  And all the food that the church brought in--oh it was so so hard.  Finally after about 6 days I had a melt down and pureed up some lasagna that had been brought.  I don't think the low protein the first week out will hurt anything.  That being said--things will have to change around eventually to avoid some bad consequences.
