Hi,

this group was recommended to me. I am about 2.5 years out for surg. Doing good but have a sugar issue to work on. How do you all feel about artificial sweeteners?

Welcome Wendy, or Gail, or Ellen! Is Wendy your first name? I think you will like this group - some new to Maintenance (like me) and some that have been sleeved for years!

I use low calories sweeteners, but mostly Truvia/stevia which is natural. I add it to my plain yogurt and sometimes to hot tea. I also substitute for regular sugar in some recipes.

Welcome to this group. I am new to maintenance and to this group as well. :)  I have been using Splenda.... but I am wondering if this is a good choice. Hoping someone will tell me about the effects of using Splenda. Thanks!

Hi Wendy,

Welcome!

Intellectually, I am not a big fan of artificial sweeteners just because I try to avoid chemicals in general.  I do think they are safe in moderation.

In practice, I use them in coffee/tea (and I drink a lot of coffee and tea!) because those drinks help keep me satisfied and away from food.   I am not sure that I could classify my use as moderate, unfortunately.

In my own bit of weirdness, I usually have more than one variety around and loosely rotate between them, sometimes even in the same drink.  I figure that spreads any potential long term risk around.  I'm not claiming that this makes any sense at all!

I drink a lot of decaf coffee and tea, i find the warm sweet drink helpful, but lately the splenda use is getting to be a lot and i am sneaking in cream instead of 2% milk.

I'm a science nerd and like to look at evidence based research to help me make my health related decisions. Here is an interesting article on sweeteners http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/early/2012/07/09/CIR.0b0 13e31825c42ee

Morning and welcome.

sweeteners.  Don't like the taste of any of them.

However I miss bread and if someone could up for a substitute would be all over it.  The gluten free stuff is not only expensive but tastes bad.   Just my opinion.

I just plain avoid bread, too risky for me and it takes up a lot of space
