First Day on this Group...... Howdy from NC!

I just reached my goal two days ago and was suggested to join this group. My goal weight was 140. I want to get on down to 135 to have some wiggle room. I don't want to ever get above 140. I was told by my nutritionist that 130 was too low for me. I'm 5'4'' and 58 1/2 years old.She said 135 should be my lowest point. At this point I am trying to keep my carbs and protein levels around the same. I have a lot of friends doing the low carb, high protein diet. I asked my NUT how many carbs should I be taking in? She said between 80-100 grams! That blew me away, since most low carb eaters will not go over 20-40 carbs. I asked her about that. She said eating low carb is fine for short term but it is not good for keeping weight off. I need to stay away from the low carb forums I guess. So, here I go with this maintenance ride experience!! Hope it's not a bumpy ride! LOL

Welcome to the group!

As for the carbs: Add them back in very gradually - VERY GRADUALLY. Stick to healthy, low glycemic index carbs and continue to avoid simple sugars. Everyone's carb tolerance is different. Some maintain very well at 100 carbs per day. Others, not so much! Some people do much better at between 50 & 70 carbs per day. You'll have to figure out your level. There really is no steadfast rule.

Since you still want to lose another 5 pounds, not something you have to worry about right this minute anyhow!

Again, welcome!

Thank you for telling me to add the carbs very slowly. I will do that especially knowing everyone is different on how many carbs they can have while maintaining. Thanks again!

I wanted and still may try to get down to 130. I don't know why I was told that was too low for me. Do you think it is due to my old age of 58? LOL If people tend to gain 15 lbs during the first 3 years, I really need to get way down there. I "sure" don't want to gain this back!! I have not weighed this amount in 30 years!

I feel like a teenager again!LOL Well, almost anyway! LOL Recycled Teenager maybe! ??

Welcome! Glad you made it over here! Our stats are very similar - I started out at about the same weight and am 5' 4" as well. My personal goal was 135 but my surgeon wanted me lower (128-130) because most people gain back 15 or so pounds in the first 3 years. Well, I am now down to 124.6 and am trying to add back healthy calories.

Welcome Karen!  I found maintenance to be daunting.  I agree with others to go slowly to find what works for you.  Looking forward to having you with us!

Welcome and congrats! Looking forward to having you here :-). Regarding carbs, we do indeed each have to find our way. There is some research that suggests that the majority of wls patients can tolerate about 80 grams daily without triggering the monster, but still best to go slowly. I do super well with 80-100, with the occasional foray closer to 150, but if I linger closer to that higher number, my brain lights up and I'm jonesin'.

Hi Karen,

I just joined this group recently as well.  I haven't actually reached maintenance yet, I think, but am getting close.

The whole goal weight thing is pretty interesting.  I tend to look at it in terms of BMI.  Varying members of my medical team have given me varying advise.

I look forward to the ride, bumpy or not!

WOW!!! I just noticed you have lost 231 POUNDS!!! That is totally AWESOME!! May I ask your age? How long did it take for you to reach your goal? I am so proud of you!! Yes, I think the BMI is more important number than the goal weight. You have done it!!! I'll scoot on over, Skinny Minnie and you can sit on the maintenance bench with me! :)
