adjusted goal weight
yeah bmi is a very simplified rule of thumb that insurance companies use to abuse people and not a serious rule. Dr. Cirangle told my hubby that his goal weight was too low. K you look great in the photos and don't need to lose an ounce. sometimes this becomes a competition within our minds and we lose sight of what its really about. I feel like 128 is more than i would like but dr. C had told me I was done at 137. we have to know the difference between rationalizing extra pounds and making a sound judgement about what is a healthy weight both physically and mentally. diane
Makes sense what you say. I want my cholesterol numbers to come down and I am one whose weight really influences my cholesterol numbers. The less I weigh the better my cholesterol numbers are. I don't necessarily need to get off my statin, but I would like it to be optional and I'm getting to that point again where I'll be able to manage it with weight and diet. I also like the idea of having my body fat percentage on the lower side for my age. I don't need to be in the "excellent" range, but "above average" would be my preference - so something below 19% will be just fine.
Ron grew out of one of his medium sweaters and handed it over to me. I was skeptical about fitting in to it, but it's a pleasant fit and I'm comfortable in it. So, I'm getting back to being a medium, rather than a large or XL depending on the cut. That makes me feel that my work is paying off.
It's going to take some time for me get where I'm going so I have several months to contemplate the goal weight. I'm all about maintaining this time, though, which is a very different outlook than the one I had before. Before, it was get to goal, get to goal, get to goal with no after plan whatsoever. Didn't work so well in the end.
Kairk, I think you look great in those pictures! I agree that goal weight is a personal thing. BMI is certainly not a perfect measure. When I reached the goal the surgeon set for me, my BMI was still in the obese range. We did agree that I could comfortably lose another 20 lbs. or so, which I never did get to. I kept sabotaging myself every time I tried to go lower, which is a whole other issue that I need to work on. However, I felt healthy at the original goal weight, my BP was normal, cholesterol was going down, diabetes was resolved, sleep apnea was resolved, and my fat to muscle ratio was in the normal range. I have an extra large frame. If I were to get down to the normal range of BMI for my height, I would literally look like a famine victim. I know that my current weight is several pounds over my original goal weight, which is what I'm aiming to get back to for now. When I get there, I'll have to decide if I'm comfortable there or want to lose some more. Whatever weight we choose as our goal weight needs to be realistic, comfortable, and healthy for each of us. I think if 180 is realistic, comfortable, and healthy for you Kairk, then that's where you should be. Just my 2 cents. :)

Thanks Mary! I'm content with my decision for the moment. I may change my mind once I'm below 180. I may feel comfortable closer to 170. We shall see. For now I'm really trying to be "deliberate" in my thoughts and actions to get me to where I want to be.
I have no doubts that I will make it, it's just a matter of time. As you know, it's honest to goodness work and dedication and dealing with our "food demons" and our realities when we are this far out. Granted, I was thinking today how lucky I am to still have very limited hunger and a sleeve that helps limit the amount of food I am able to eat - especially when I eat in a healthy manner. The tool is still pretty awesome at 4 years out.
