Recommend bariatric to a family member?

Hi guys - haven't been here in forever (almost 3 years post-op) but when I think about asking something I think about this group.

Hope everyone is doing incredible well. I am. Been maintaining around 120 pounds all this time.

So I have an older sister (she's 50 now) and as opposed to me, who got fat onluy for 4 years, she's been obese for the most part of the last 20 years. She's happy and happily married with 2 kids in college and has a loving,  supporting husband. Since I did the surgery and tried to convince her to look into it, she always said she would never do it, and that her husband would never agree to an unnecessary surgery (he's in sciences), and on top of that they are quite gourmet and love entertaining and cooking.

So today she tells me she booked an appointment with a bariatric doctor to talk about the possibility of doing a surgery. Her family doctor had already told her when asked that she's a good candidate. Although she's healthy now, I think she realized that things might start changing soon in her age and that she has a hard time walking around.

I feel conflicted. In one hand I don't regret my surgery at all, I would do it again (maybe I'd start with band if I could), but at the same time, don't you guys feel a little guilty recommending our surgery to others when deep down we know that it changes everything, mainly having the ability to enjoy a complete meal, (as in the enjoyment of having a restaurant meal with appetizer, entree, desert). I know I know... it's better to be thin and healthy. Still it does take away the pleasure relationship we use to have with food. I am not sure if it's for everyone.

How do you guys feel about recommending it to beloved family members? I keep seeing in my head the vision of her saying "why didn't you tell me it was this hard"?

Btw, she lives in Canada and for some reason the only surgery the government insurance pays for is gastric bypass (ugh). Should I insist she does vsg? I think she's afraid the insurance won't cover if there are complications if she goes for self pay with other types of surgery.

Sorry for the long post... Hope you understand this is not easy for me :) Thanks guys!

i recommended it to my older brother. he did it and lost 170 lbs and has never felt better. he would do it again in a minute and so would i. my husband also did it. he has lost 180 lbs and is pleased. vsg has changed out family for the better. mind you, i didn't push these people - only told them how much it helped me.

but i would really try to figure out a way to get vsg and not the rny. my surgeon thinks the rny will be history in a few years.   gl  diane
